NIL for a walkon?

That's crazy. I was just listening to a conversation about NIL and the transfer portal on a sports radio show this morning. They were saying how NIL, transfer portal and national signing day is hurting football because signing day and the portal fall at the same time. Said they are a lot less scholarship opportunities available for high school seniors because everyone is trying to fill their needs in the portal. As a result, smaller schools are getting a lot better athletes, which I suppose is the bright spot in it all. NIL is a whole other animal that will eventually be uncontrollable.

I don't know the situation, could be way off base, but just as devils advocate type take: NIL isn't salary. It's marketing.
Have you all seen that LSU gymnast (I think?) that is making a boatload in NIL? It's all because she's a social media influencer, and good looking. Couple million followers on instagram I think? Nobody tuning into gymnastics of any kind to justify that type of money as a salary. So, say all that to say if this walk on has a huge following on YouTube or whatever, for whatever reason, then there is value there in an NIL type deal.

I'm with you all on the general sentiment of college football and the direction it's taking though and NIL is a big reason.

In its current form, NIL is like pro sports before salary caps. And if it's not regulated somehow in the near future, it will ruin college sports for me. I'm not saying I will stop watching, but I won't have as much interest as I do now.
