Which one is better Nitro or Heavy Shot #13 ammo?

I want to use a Heavy shot load in stright #7's. Will the Heavy Shot #13's shoot just as good as the Nitros?

I have never shot the nitro shells, but the hevi 13 is great. You will be amazed. Go to oldgobbler.com shooting forum those guys are the bsks of shot gun patterns.

I have no experience with straight #7s. I do shoot 3.5" Nitro 4X5X7 and 3.5" Hevi Magnum-Blend 5X6X7 both. They both should great in my Rem 870 SP (23" barrel) with an Indian Creek .665 choke. While the Nitros pattern a little better (more dense) and have a few more pellets in the target (<5% more), they kick a h*ll of a LOT more! I love both shells, but I prefer the recoil from the Magnum-Blends over the Nitros. I could not tell a difference on the turkeys I killed last year. My experience is the turkeys do not flop with either - dead as a doornail.

I've shot the nitro H517T in 4x5x7 (2 7/8 oz) the last two years, but since then Heavy shot has came out with a 3.5" 2 1/4 oz. load in 4x5x7 and a straight #7 load also. Nitro will custom make the H517T in straight #7 but they will cost about $175 a box. I can get 25 of the heavy #13 for about $130.

The Hevi-13 is the better value. I never have shot nitros, and I don't plan on it. I can get about as good of patterns out of my guns with the Hevi-13 #7's vs the patterns that others are getting with Nitros with the same size load. And I can buy them without having to wait for weeks at a time.

2oz load of Hevi-13 #7's. One on the left has 316 shot. The one on the right has 295 shot.

Both those above were shot at a taped 40yds. So was this one. There is 86% of pattern inside the 20" circle. That is a 2oz load of Hevi-13 #7's.

And then there is the 835 with the Star Dot .676 choke at 40yds. I paid $20 for this choke. This is a 10" circle with 349 shot using Hevi-13 2 and 1/4oz #7's. Now Nitros may be able to beat this with the same size load, but for the money you pay for them can you justify the slight difference if any?

One more example with the .669 Indian Creek choke and the 2oz load of Hevi-13 #7's at a taped 40yds. Just another very good turkey killing pattern for both 10" and 20" numbers. How much more does a guy need?

Thanks. Nitros make some great loads. But at some point you got to ask yourself does the cost justify the mean from what you save in buying Hevi-13 loads and shooting them through a great shooting choke like Indian Creek.
