I made a post about my neck of the woods yesterday, and not alot happening...

Well, I took my boy yesterday evening and started calling from a tall ridge right smack dab in the center of our property...I hit a couple notes on the Power Crystal and the woods came alive! I worked a group of 3 for about an hour and they got within 50-yds... It was a real thick area and no shots were taken..When I needed them to turn left, they turned right and started moving away..
As soon as these 3 birds got out of sight, 2 more started up the ridge behind us... It was the same deal, close but not close enough...

All five birds would cut me off right in the middle of my calling sequence.. They were really hot! I just couldnt coax that last few yards out of any of them... Right when I thought it was about to happen, they turned the other way....DANG! :(

Why is that? What is it about the last few yards? Any suggestions on calling?

As i said from day 1 the way the game is supposed to be played is the hens supposed to go to the Toms, and the Toms are like each and every individual....to each is his own nothing to do with your calling IMO just not time they are still bunched up give em 2 or 3 weeks and they will be on top of you!

It was really cool to see the birds do their thing...They fanned out, gobbled, spit, snotted, puked, everything.... I was really confident..... Then they just lost interest... Two different groups...

You probably hit the nail on the head about the group thing...I think if it had been a single bird, it may have turned out a little different....

I don't know man, I had a big gobbler coming in opening morning by himself. He came up the ridge at about 70 yds, moving from my left to right up the ridge. When he got up to where I could see him well he stood there for just a sec strutted and gobbled. Then kept on his way on the same path he came up the hill and went over the other side. He never acted like he wanted to come over there but he sounded very interested. I can't catch a break on these dang things hope my luck turns around this year.

Why? Because they are freaking turkeys.

Who knows, my guess is subordinate birds who were afraid of getting whipped if they came all the way. Or and just throwing this out there, not bashing, you could have overcalled which can cause them to hang up. I have no idea on the latter, and my guess is the former.

Good news, is they are responsive, not spooked, and will be there next time you get the chance to go.

Thanks, Hopefully I will be able to reduce the numbers a bit...Overcalling is easy to do..In the heat of the moment, when they are quiet, you think "I will just throw one more out there"...It is fun to hear them gobble...

When you have birds responding, how often do you call?
