Congrats man, you are off to a great start. Looks like exact same area as yesterday. Do you think/know he is one of the other ones you saw yesterday? Regardless, good job.

Alright I am home finally so time for a story. :)

Rolled up at the club this morning at about 5:45 and received a text from the only other turkey hunter in the club that he killed one yesterday afternoon and was taking the day off. That means we killed 3 off of it yesterday. I went ahead slipped in to where I was planning on going and set up about 30 yards off the edge of a food plot close to where I killed my bird yesterday. The birds are using the area big time from the sign I have been seeing in the pines and I hoped for the best. I sat there calling off and on until about 7 and decided to get up and do some slipping around and try to drum something up. Well I walked maybe 300 yards and come up on some fresh sign in the pines that had either been done late yesterday evening or early this morning. I decided to back off the road and set up and just call for a few minutes and see what happened. I set down facing the logging road and pulled out my Rocky Top Glass over Slate and started cutting on it and yelping on a mouth call. I figured what the heck I haven't heard anythign all morning, maybe I will drum something up. I set the call down and maybe 4 or 5 minutes go by and a crow flies directly over me just raising hell and makes a gobbler sound off directly behind me at maybe 100 yards. I spin on the tree and flip the safety off, maybe 5 seconds go by and here he comes in half strut coming through the pines. He stepped out into the open and I introduced him to Mr. Nitro and Mrs. Rhino.

I killed him about 300 yards from where I shot the one yesterday in a group of pines that is on the ridge top between two hardwood bottoms. The pines are big pines about 15-20 years old and clear. The birds are using them big time right now to strut and just hang out. You can see for 200 yards or more in places. I talked to the other guy that hunts it and 3 of us killed 3 off of it yesterday and then this one today we are 4 for 4. I sort of hate to go back and not kill anything with the run we have going right now.

Doesn't sound like they are doing a whole lot of gobbling there right now; had you gone to listen in the days/weeks leading up to the season?

Your point about not going back is an interesting one that I've often asked myself. Wildlife biologists say that typically the birds we harvest can be considered "surplus" and that the flock will replenish itself annually. I try to manage the population on my place as best I can but never really knew what a good rule of thumb was.

The other guy said one of the birds they killed gobbled 100 times. I haven't heard 25 gobbles in 2 days. Sort of boring, but I will take it. :)

you know I have never thought to count gobbles, I just enjoy listening to and watching the bird.

Congrats on the 2nd kill already, looks like you're having an awesome season so far

Good story and thank goodness for those loud mouth crows. I too have had a few crows help me get situated and kill a tight lipped approaching gobbler at the last second when I had no idea he was in the world before the crow sounded off. Gotta love it,congrats!

Yep they have saved me on numerous occasions.

Congrats on 2 good birds.
