Didn't think I'd get a chance to try this year but this boss bird was with his hens behind the house when I got home from work. Actually I only saw hens, but with the trees in the field I had a feeling he was just out of sight.
When I got back to a good starting point in the field, I saw him strutting. Crawled out there and sat for a while with the fan up, until he noticed...then he strutted and creeped closer until he was 20 yards and closing. At that point I was afraid I'd miss if he got any closer, so I dropped him right there. Got it on video too...I will gladly take that to wrap the season and can now say I've tried the fanning. Although I probably won't do it again for a good while, it's a trick I could pull out every now and then, and it was pretty awesome seeing him get pissed off and come in for a fight.
