Okay, so I hired a guide

I hired a guide for one day of turkey hunting. It was pretty inexpensive to be honest and I thought I might learn something.

We met at 5 AM up in Sevierville and winded up through the mountains to a big holler. There was another couple there (on their honeymoon) going along as well. I thought we would be in two separate areas, but we were just a couple hundred yards away from each other.

Looking out of my blind down the "holler". That is the end of my Barnett Crossbow.

Sure enough as it got closer to light, gobblers fired up all around us. I even heard one walk down the ridge to my left, but I couldn't see him in the darkness and laurel. Not three minutes later I hear a "BOOM". The "bride" got her bird. :D

The guide texted me to start calling from my blind that there were two birds to my right. However, when they shot they skeedaddled and I never saw them. In fact the only turkeys I saw that day were standing on the side of Pellissippi Parkway. :(

Either I have the worst luck, or I'm the worst turkey hunter in the history of the world. I really wished I was the only one going with the guide, but I should have asked before I booked the hunt that morning. Live and learn.

(I really need an Eastern for my Grand Slam and time is running out for the kid.) :(

I was bored to tears this morning and would've taken you. We wouldn't be trapped in a blind with any decoys though. A real hunt in other words ;)

That would have been cool. I did actually have to work this morning. Had a meeting with a customer. Normally though my schedule is flexible since I own most of the company. :)

This morning though I had a customer that has a great need for my equipment and it looks like good money. I like turkey hunting, but I like $90,000 more. :D

I am a guide but I am not in your area. IMO you got a bum deal... I do not like to talk about other "professional" guides but in 33 years of doing this full time this is not a normal practice. Must be some other willing folks in your area to go with and learn from. If you want to be a part of the faaaaar right of turkey hunting give Setterman a call.... LOL Never met him but sounds like a great hunter.....

I guess the faaaar right comment was supposed to be offensive. I won't take any offense to being labeled that, if being far right makes me some sort of bad person I'll ride it

If you and your new wife are turkey hunting in a blind in a big holler near Sevierville on your honeymoon...

I've been around "guide types" my whole life. Most weren't good enough hunters themselves, to be able to cater to the "faaar right" crowd of turkey hunters. If it weren't for "pet" turkeys, most would not be able to make any money at it. I believe if someone really wanted to learn to turkey hunt, a guide of the faar right caliber, would be able to teach much more than someone who just set them in a blind, in a field, looking at a decoy spread. To each their own though.

I am having a difficult time figuring out how anyone would want to be around you. People paying money to kill a turkey want to kill a turkey. If they had to sit and watch you fumble with a call all day and got nothing in return, you would go out of business fast. For a very large group of hunters, it is fun to sit in a blind or behind a log and put out some decoys. A lot of people pay good money for the experience of something new to them. Most don't want a guide who takes all season to kill 4 turkeys. Not assuming you haven't tagged out or anything. ;)

yep there are different types of hunters and if you're paying for a hunt then you should have better odds of killing a bird. Learning the old fashioned way shouldn't be a paid service, it should be passed down. ;)

Where could a guy find some of these pet turkeys? It's getting awful close to the end of the season!

According to him they are everywhere except where he hunts. the only pet turkeys I've seen all year were strutting in people's yards

Goodness guys! Lighten up! I have hunted plenty of turkeys that were not pets. I have guided turkey for many years from Montana to Alabama. Sorry I have not met Cowman or Setterman. You can read the part where I said we had not met but I thought he sounded like a great hunter. You choose to hunt anyway you want. I hate that some people look down on others for the way they choose. Yes I have been guilty of this in many aspects of my life also. I am not throwing stones. I will not apologize for introducing many people through the years to the outdoors but fishing or hunting where there was plentiful game. I suppose since I also like to fish stocked streams and lakes I am less of an outdoorsman than others... I am trying to make a living by providing experiences not proving how hard I can make it on the uninitiated. That being said my pets gave me the finger this morning and they went home without even getting into the game. I did not me to be offensive with my Faaar right comment. I am sorry and I will take it back. By the way I made my bones on public lands until I could afford leases......

You didn't offend me with that comment, I took it as a compliment. My response was meant tongue in cheek :tu:
