Not trying to be critical here; but I have hunted with several different turkey guns over the years. Having said that, there's one thing that is a constant. EACH make and model are different when it comes to choke's and loads. In fact, each particular gun has it's own characteristics. Here's an example: about 7 years ago, I purchased a new Winchester Super X 2. After seeing it, two of my buddies immediately bought identical guns. Now, we all three got together to pattern these guns. We use white freezer paper with a bullseye at 40 yards for starters. We had several different chokes between us to try and we all bought 2 or 3 different brands and shot sizes of shells (BTW, all were 3 1/2" shells). My gun patterned the best with a Gobblin' Thunder .660 with 2 1/4oz. #6 Winchester supreme's. One of my buddies patterned the best with a .660 GT, BUT with Winchester supreme 2 1/4oz. #5's. Now the other buddy wound up being partial to a .655 GT and Winchester supreme #5's in 2 oz.. There's not much difference between the three; BUT, my point here is this, each gun will dictate to you EXACTLY which set-up it prefers; but, you HAVE to shoot different combinations to find out what that is. In my example, just because we all wound up shooting Winchester supreme ammo., doesn't mean that Federal, Remington, etc., didn't pattern well. It just means that the Winchester's were a tad bit better. It's all about having confidence in your set-up. Thanks for listening.

One of the biggest selling points, and myths, in the hunting industry is that in order to be succesfull we must shoot farther and hit harder... Every bird I have ever killed was within sixty feet of me...If it wasn't I didn't take the shot...I have 12 differant shot guns that I can kill a turkey with within that range with any one of em and it doesn't matter which shot load I decide to throw in it....but then I guess I'll never get to brag about a sixty yard kill..... :)
Ain't that the truth

I think if hunters would invest in a small, well made range finder and use them, there would not be as much empahsis on the need for longer range load/choke combinations.

tndrbstr and Hatchee,

My post is not about long range shooting at all. My intent was to specify the importance of patterning your gun and having confidence with it. It's not just my turkey gun either; I want/have confidence in ALL of my hunting weapons. I wouldn't feel comfortable while afield without it.

I agree 100%. I just see a lot of people that are way too casual about their range estimation and calling skills and try to make up for it with shells and chokes.
