Any of you hunting Mississippi? If so, good luck and report back with how things are going so those of us who are working and not hunting can live vicariously through you.

I went last weekend for juvie... covered 600 acres Friday afternoon, not a peep (although our birds rarely gobble in the afternoons)

Went Saturday AM, walked 4.5 miles, covered 750 acres. Finally got a hen to answer, actually thought she was another hunter she sounded so bad... called her into 30 yards and she then flew up into a tree to get a better look for me. We talked with each other for 15 minutes without another bird answering anywhere else, and I finally got bored with her and pushed her off. Never had one fly up looking for me this early in the season. I suspect she may have gotten bumped off the rest of her flock by a hunter or predator. But again, not a single gobble. I know there are a few on my lease in south MS; got a pic of 5 LB's in a group back in Feb.

Have to pull a 72h shift at work this weekend, so I won't get back into the woods until Monday mid- day. I may be too tired to run and gun, so my plan is to pick a likely crossing area in the middle of 200 acres that was recently burned and nap in the woods and call occasionally. Way too boring for my normal style, but it may be all I can muster.

That had to be demoralizing!

At least you'll be out there. I did something similar years ago up in the day when nothing was happening. After my last call sequence without hearing a peep, I finally laid back flat and was GONE! No idea how long I slept, but I was awakened by footsteps in the leaves coming up behind me  !

I waited as long as I dared but then things got quiet and a little voice kept screaming "coyote", so I rolled over and grabbed my gun in one swoop. There was nothing there! No idea what it was!

Good luck though, and keep the updates coming as it helps speed up time a little.

Pretty typical opener here so far birds gobbled well on the roost then just a little on the ground. Now silent except for this bird I'm patiently waiting on to gobble again. He free gobbles every 30 minutes or so down below me in this swamp. Every time he gobbles I slide a little closer. I've only called to him once and got no response. But from experience if I can get dangerously close he probably will play. Just have to be patient

Great to be back in the woods and I found some of Ren's trash he left here decades ago :D

hahahah actually wouldn't suprise me lol. Ill be down in Union springs next weekend to hunt a buddies farm, may run up to some of my old grounds while down there.

We made it to the woods yesterday afternoon. No action. Wish we could've hunted the morning. We are getting ready now for our first morning. Hope they gobble. Forecast is for rain/thunderstorms most of the day. I will report back later.

Thanks guys. Nothing good to report yet. We didn't hear a peep this morning. Napped through a monsoon from 10-2. This afternoon has been dead as well. Couple guys we know hunting 3 or 4 miles away have been dead also. All the rain is gone so hopefully tomorrow will be better. I'm going to keep at it til fly up. I'm dying to hear a gobble!

Got back from Bama earlier today. Two openers in two different states and I still am not on the board. Had the honor of sharing hotel camp with one of the best trumpet callers in the country, who hails from South Carolina. Two of my spots were completely void of turkey sign. Sent him to my third spot and he was able to get on turkeys each day. He struck one with his yelper yesterday around 10:30. Was able to call him over 300 yards across a major creek straight to the gun, only to miss him clean at 28 steps. This is what he told me anyway :) Guy is friggin unbelievable on a yelper. The tone and range he is able to produce is nothing short of pure turkey. He could rival the best mouth yelpers, Dave Owens included ;)
