Did some scouting yesterday evening and spotted two different gobblers with about 8 hens. Later in the evening I went to roost the birds and pinned down the location of one of the gobblers. Woke up this morning to a downpour, so we stuck around and waited on the rain to let up a little. Set up in a pine thicket, on the curve of a logging road with a pond about 40 yards directly in front of me. My dad hit the call 30 yards behind us and the birds immediately pitched down about 80 yards away. Hens were cutting and cackling, no gobble. Geese and crows were flying overhead, again no gobble. A lone bird began to walk around the edge of the pond and was looking hard into the pine thicket. After a little more coaxing the bird rounded the pond and was in range. About this time, I was able to put a beard of the turkey and at that point he took his last step at 6:50am. The bird weighed 23 lbs with an 11 inch beard and 1 inch spurs. This was the first bird I have killed in the morning that never gobbled, and was the first hunt my girlfriend has ever witnessed. This all made for an awesome start to the 2014 turkey season. Can't wait to eat the turkey nuggets for supper.
