How many times did we run Hurd up the middle for a loss or no gain? Did Debord not see the A&M game with Kamara running to the outside? Did you see the first or second play of the game where Hurd was the lead blocker and Kamara ran for 8 yards? They never ran that play again. I don't understand. When you know your O Line can't open holes inside, running up the middle just exposes them. Is Debord an idiot or is Butch calling the plays?

Not a Vol fan but it all depend on the coach and his style of play calling. Some coaches go by a script for each game and stick with it, with few adjustments. Others call plays by the flow of the game and field position. Both styles work at times but the other team sometimes disrupts the flow. Not sure which one Debord falls under.

I was there and kept asking 3 things:

1. Why keep trying Hurd up the middle?
2. Why not play Kamara more?
3. Why are we trying to make Dobbs a drop back passer instead of moving him outside of the pocket since he throws better that way?

A guy I work with went to Michigan State and told me last year when UT hired Debord it was a mistake. I asked why and he said when he was at Michigan he didn'tt know his butt from a hole in the ground when it comes to play calling. Apparently he was right.

Funny thing is he looks like a genius in other games, 700 yds against A&m

He also looked good the second half against UF. It's easy to second guess these guys but there's another coach across the field getting paid big bucks to stop them... :)

Gravey is the only one that addressed the original post. Alabammer didn't MAKE us run Hurd up the middle over and over. Alabammer didn't MAKE us run a play for 8 yards then never run it again. Alabammer didn't MAKE us not try all the things that were successful against A&M. Why was Debord doing all this? Is he an idiot?

Oh, you are a Vol fan. You'll never admit it here, but we know you are. You are the first one to know anything going on at Tennessee. Anytime I hear a rumor about Tennessee I come here to see it's true because you'll have posted about it. You know more about Tennessee football than some of the media. We are going to make you an honorary VFL! [emoji23]

You would be right.... Living in Knoxville, being a sports fan, and having a job that requires me to work for UT. It all makes sense. I have even gave a speech to the team before.... :)

I guess from my grammar you can even tell that I attended UT..... :rotf: That doesn't change where I grew up or what team I rooted for as a kid. I have friends that are former UT player... :) We talk a lot more smack than acceptable on here.... :tu:

I know a lot more about the program than I share on here. I only post what the media puts out there. .... :)

It has been documented that Debord scripts a number of plays that he does not deviate from at the beginning of the game. He runs those, takes his notes and then adjusts or whatever he does from there depending on what he has seen. He undoubtedly did the same thing against Alabama but the oline started failing early on. A 265 lb true freshman was inserted at RT. Against Tim Williams. And then as if that wasnt enough, Drew Richmond had to be put in at LT for Kendrick when he went down. The same Richmond that got benched earlier in the season. Think about that for a second. Those scripted plays went right out the window at that point and it was just whatever might work is what we will try. And nothing worked unfortunately.

I wish I knew the answers to your questions.. especially as to why Kamara wasn't used the way he was in the A&M game.

I'm not sure if Debord is an idiot but I'm leaning that direction.

Consider this; If Hurd had played in the A&M game and UT had still the same number of turnovers, would they have had a shot at taking it to overtime? I say we would have been beaten by 21.

Another way to look at it; If Hurd hadn't been ready to go against Bama, you can bet Kamara would have been used the way he was in Texas.

IMO, it was stupid to not give Kamara more opportunity with the plays that worked against A&M.

When Spurrier was at UF, he used to mention "50" often in practice. He had a goal of 50 offensive points every game. I really like that. A team is going to lose very few games if they can score 50 every outing. I wouldn't be surprised to learn Jones and Debord have a MUCH lower point total goal.. like maybe "18".

Does anybody remember the late hit Kamara took out of bounds on punt return? Does anybody else remember him doing much else after that? Probably a reason why Kamara wasnt used like against A&M.

Also, biggest majority of the rushing done against A&M was done between the tackles, not to the outside. Against Bama, running to the outside was the same as committing suicide.
So was rushing between the tackles. It was either death by getting hit by a convoy of trucks or by a train. Take your pick.

Its easy to Monday morning quarterback a coaches Game plan after a loss. Things become crystal clear when you see what didn't work. However, that does not mean that what the coaches didn't do(like running Kamara outside) would have worked any better. Maybe it would have, or maybe the score would have ended up 79 to 10 instead of 49 to 10. ...we just don't know.

Bottom line is any coach employed at a top tier div1 school didn't get there by being an idiot. Like gator-n-buck said: for every coach on one side of the field there's another coach across the field getting paid big bucks to stop them...

If winning football games at a rate that kept a person employed at a top tier div1 school making millions of dollars a year was easy, we would all be doing it.

Correct. Sometimes they are PE teachers :D !

If a coach is too stubborn to ride what works as opposed to sticking with the script, then you have problems.

How many times did we run Kamara with Hurd as the lead blocker after the first play that went for 7-8 yards? I don't remember ANY!!!!

All of this talk about why Kamara wasnt used. I asked if anybody saw the late hit out of bounds and if he did very much else after that? Well some were saying last night they had seen him on campus wearing a knee brace. Jayson Swain saying now that they are evaluating that knee for possible ACL damage. Said it was swollen and couldnt put much weight on it. Dont know if any of its true. Just what Ive heard.

That sucks! I didn't watch all of that game, must have missed that hit.

Cant think of the guys name but he is or was a walk on with the team. They did a story on him about him having diabetes. He seems like a good guy. His dad played football for Bama. He also plays baseball for Bama and maybe even played pro baseball before walking on at Bama. Cant remember the name. Help me out Bammers.

Anyway, yeah it was a late hit that got the flag thrown and Kamara was slow to get up and limped all the way across the field back to the TN sideline.

Butch can trump the play call at any time, he's too loyal to his "buddies". If he's not real careful eventually this will catch up with him the way Dave Clausen did to Fulmer. I like Butch, but he needs to reevaluate his staff come seasons end.
