I'm planning on getting a reloading kit soon. Plan on mainly reloading 458 socom and maybe some 9mm and 270. Anyone have any input on the Lee presses or should I spend the extra $$ on rcbs or Hornady ?
If your looking at a single stage the Lee cast metal press is pretty good but if your just starting I would watch for a sale on the RCBS Rockchucker Supreme kit. I would stay away from the little aluminum presses but some people have good luck with them.
The Lee presses are fine, but I am a real RCBS fan for just about all things reloading. They make good products for just a little bit more, but they back them up with great customer service. I'm not opposed to most Lee stuff, but I greatly prefer RCBS
I have used Lee for a number of years (30+) with few or no problems loading calibers from 300 WinMag down to 9mm.
The RCBS is a better constructed press (and the product guarantee reflects that). All of the RCBS presses I have worked with or touched have zero play or movement in the parts. Nice, solid, well built hardware. Highly recommended.
When my Lee base (after 28 years) cracked at the pivot point replacement was totally on me.
However. I have been loading a bunch of 9mm past several weeks. No single stage press is worth the misery unless you plan on keeping your 9mm shooting at very low levels. I am firing up a Dillon I acquired from a member.
I went with Hornady and it is a step above the Lee in my opinion but the rock chucker is two steps above both of them. I wish I had spent a bit more and gotten the rcbs
