Ive seen this pattern called so many different things, especially vintage duck camo, but what is the actual designation for this pattern? I see it alot in pictures and articles about hunting from the 1970's and 80's Its the coolest looking one IMO.

After a quick search this if the best I could find. The military originally came out with a pattern like that in the 40s and it was called frog skin. Think there was one version for areas with lots of vegetation and another variation for desert environments. In the 60s at the beginning of the Vietnam war rangers and seals wore what looks to be closer to the original duck hunter camo. The Vietnamese had a name for it that translated into Leopard.

I would venture to say that there were probably several different variations of frog skin that it may not have had a name lol

The German army and several other European militaries were wearing this until just recently. Some of them may still be. It is called Flecktarn. They still have the same color schemes now but have advanced it over the years to a digital pattern. This is the best picture I could find on the internet of it. But I have a jacket I traded one of my BDU field jackets to a Greek soldier for his field jacket in Kosovo. Look exactly like the OPs pattern.

Those camo patterns are World War 2 Army patterns. There were two patterns, spring (more green) and fall (more brown - seen on vintage duck hunting clothing). For a short time, they made uniforms with one pattern on the inside and one on the outside so they could be reversed. Those were too hot, so they went to separate uniforms for each pattern. Those two patterns were the only ones that Dad, Grandpa and I wore when hunting when I was young. The woodland and jungle military patterns were out there too, but that was it on camo selection. I remember buying most of our camo from military surplus stores since it was typically the most well made. Dad and Grandpa had coveralls (insulated and non-insulated) in the green and brown camo patterns. I always remember them when I see those patterns. I still have my grandpa's Jones hat in WW2 camo.

It was called "Duck Hunter" and was used mainly in the 70's into the early 90's. My all-time favorite is the brown version and originally was known as US M1942–the camo used by American troops in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. Duck hunter has a solid background color (Tan/Green) with large splotches of at least two other colors overlaid on top.

Regards, Mike
