Owl and Crow Calls

I hoot with my mouth, so not sure on owl calls at all.
Crow calls I hardly ever use because to me they dont work enough, too many of them sound bad, and I can usually hoot with my mouth all day long if I need too.
Woodhavens real crow sounds realistic, but they are expensive and I had two tear up easy. Cedar hills crow call sounds realistic.
All of the big manufacture crow calls sound bad, but imo the best sounding mass produced crow call is a primos power crow.

Hoot'N Stick Owl call from Hooks custom calls is nice.
I also use the Heckler crow call. I'll try and upload you a video when I get home of the Heckler. It is loud and shrill and mine has produced a ton of Gobbles.

Don't own one of either, it's usually not an issue as there are plenty of each where I hunt and if they can't get a bird to gobble then I'm moving on in search of more responsive birds.

I didn't start carrying a crow call until last year. One of my buddies is a pro-staffer for Knight & Hale and after hunting with him a few times last year I ended up buying K&H's Magnum crow call. I didn't have much faith in them, but after seeing the responses he was getting from them on MY property, I ended up getting one and carry it with me every time I hunt.

I mostly use it to keep tabs on a bird while moving into position. It doesn't work all the time, but it works enough to where I continue to carry one.

I don't carry an owl hoot as I just use my voice.

Primos Power Crow sounds good to me. I lost track of mine though. I hear more gobblers shock gobble at crows than owls anyway. Except this year they're just not gobbling much at all.

Owl with my voice...crow is some 20 year old, cheap HS Strut I think. I had to fiddle with the reed a bit to get it sounding right and a deliver pitch that turkeys would holler at though.

Same here. I've noticed as I get older it's getting really hard for me to accurately course a bird so sometimes I'll owl or crow call to better pinpoint him. Kind of the same thing with wind...I know I heard a gobble but just can't really tell where he's at.

I've given myself until next spring to find and become competent with a good pileated woodpecker call. The ratio of woodpecker calls to shock gobbles seems to far exceed that of crows for later in the day (at least where I hunt). I've thought that maybe in my area there's just so many darn crows the turkeys have become desensitized but not really sure what to think. This was a weird gobbling year but confirmed that high pitched staccato scream from woodpeckers got way more shock responses when nothing else seemed to work.

Anyone got a recommendation?

This is the best peacock/woodpecker call I've used. It is very loud! http://www.midwestturkeycall.com/detail ... M357&link=

Everyone uses owl hooters and crow calls around here and I think the gobblers know it also. I have switched to the primos 3 n 1 call that sounds like either a coyote howl, peacock,or wood pecker

I can hoot realistically with my mouth if needed. I carry a crow call, which I can also sound realistic on. I'll use either to check a gobbler on occasion. I won't call to a gobbler until I feel I have a setup where I can kill him. Constant repositioning is often required until I can get good position. Being able to know his location as I reposition is a must, which most of the time, can be achieved by real crows, owls, or woodpeckers. In those situations when the live birds are quiet, I will replicate there sounds as needed.
around here this year, the birds haven't even been gobbling at crows like they usually do. You may think they are "pet turkeys" that you call and they come in on a string gobbling the whole way. This year has been different and somewhat frustrating. I just have to remind myself that there have been a few days that they did gobble good, and I have still killed a couple.

Train tracks run right up close to the property I hunt turkey hunt the majority of the time.

When a train blows its horn, turkeys light up.

I use both on occasion when necessary, and have good success with each after years of practice to see how to get the most effective sounds out of the calls I have.

Primos Hoot Flute and Haydel's Triple Tone crow call ( I don't think they make this one any more).
