Deer gun opens tomorrow and I could care less! During much of my adult life, that statement would be construed as blasphemous. However, as the number of birthdays mount up, my passion is now turkeys and the west. I'm either mapping my next trip to Colorado/Wyoming or scouting on my place for turkeys. I will deer hunt tomorrow because its opening day and because its there. But the zeal for the sport has been dulled. For me, it does not compare with a bird answering your call and you realize that he's coming in. LOL

I will be in my pop-up blind in the morning daydreaming about spring longbeards, and wishing I had my slate call and my 870 Mag instead of grunt calls and my .270, and wishing it was April.

My son killed an 8 pointer late yesterday afternoon and we had to screw with it this morning. But I did sit out in the woods at dawn for a couple of hours. Fortunately, no deer, but I had a great morning listening to a flock talk back and forth. Don't get me wrong, if a good buck came along I would have shot it, but I enjoyed just listening to the turkeys. And, I intend to try to be in the right place at the right time come Dec 7th. Not April, but it will have to do.

I was fortunate enough to get a fall turkey permit this year. I too prefer the feathers over deer. We have several different flocks on our farm and this looks like a good upcoming season for turkeys for us. I have seen 2 silverbacks in the gang as well, now that would be cool!

Turkey hunting is definately a passion of mine. Hearing a bunch of birds gobbling on a cool spring morning just does it for me. I like deer hunting, but sitting in a cold deer stand for a couple hours doesnt appeal to me like it used to. Going on a archery elk hunt while theyre bugling is on the to-do list.
