This may not work at all, but I figured I would see if anyone else has tried it.

I'm thinking about building some open center frames/stands that will hold my thin pattern paper. They would be about 3'x3' or 4'x4'. My goal would be to have multiple frames and paper set at different ranges so I could fire one shell and know what my pattern is like at different ranges. I know that I would have to have flat ground and have them lined up pretty close, but that part is doable. My concern is the pattern not holding up after it hits the first paper.
Thoughts? This will be with TSS shells if I try it.

It may work, but seems like a whole lot of work and possibly trial and error, when you could just shoot a few shells at different yardages. I know those shells are expensive but I would figure time and material for racks would make up the difference.

A portable patterning frame is pretty easy to build out of pvc and pvc fittings. I had one (until leaving it outside) that doubled for paper tuning with my bow and patterning shotguns.

My current deal was an afterthought . My son had one of the aluminum frame/net deal that you threw baseballs into and fielded them on the bounce back. He was past those days and the net had torn in a couple of place where there wasn't any yard sale value. I was about to add it to a dump trip one day when the lightbulb came on that it might make a good pattern frame. It turned out to be the best I've used. So, it you have one of those laying around, or see one at a yard sale, they are pretty handy for shooting into.

It would seem that your farther out targets wouldn't be on with the line of sight. I'd just burn a couple of extra shells.
