Pearls Oyster House

The menu looks awesome. I would have to go back numerous times just to try everything that looks good. Just my opinion but whether or not they get the spice palette right for the red beans and rice and crawfish etoufee will determine if it is truly a good cajun restaurant or just some wannabe cajun restaurant. Those are so basic and easy to get right but allot of restaurants screw them up. It almost seems like some places are terrified of spices.

I've not been impressed the few times I've been. In my experience, most specialty restaurants like that rely on frozen food service, rather than cooked-in-house food. I see that heavy presence in their menu. For the same money, you're much better off getting much more authentic Gulf food from Chef Kelly English's "The Second Line".

our local butcher shop has stuff flown in from the Gulf when its in season, so i typically cook stuff like that myself.

like TAFKAP said most of those places rely on frozen seafood.

I don't mean frozen seafood. I mean microwave-in-a-bag stuff like alfredo pasta, frozen calamari rings, microwaved rice pilaf and broccoli, and anything tilapia.

This tells me that there isn't a qualified cook in the restaurant that's likely to adequately prepare a good jambalaya, blackened catfish, or a suitable crabcake.

Like I said, for those prices, you'll get better food, prepared in a chef's kitchen, at The Second Line. Better Oysters, too.

frozen calamari, tapia, crabcakes not frozen? lol

Frozen, breaded calamari pieces? Sure, that's reality. Calamari rings? Uhhh no.

Tilapia....just no.

Don't get me started on crab cakes.

Pearls is overpriced garbage straight off the Sysco frozen foods truck. No thanks.

Their chargrilled oysters are great.

They have good fish tacos. The jambalaya is pretty good and spicy, although a bit on the runny side for my taste. A friend of mine orders one of their fish sandwiches (grouper or amberjack, I think) pretty regularly.

Most of the other menu items are pretty good, although perhaps not too "inspired". I've never had anything that wasn't decent, but some things are better than others. I've eaten there quite a few times, as it's close to my work and vendors take us there sometimes.

A friend of mine used to be a chef there years ago when they were first getting started. The food isn't quite as good as it used to be, but there's still several things on the menu that I like.

My boss loves to go to the one downtown. I'll go if she's buying, but I've never been overly impressed. Honestly for their prices I'd rather just go to red lobster if it's going to be that kind of seafood.

Comment about the Sysco truck is spot on.
