I read this online today and thought it was worth sharing. It happened in Alabama. Not sure why they felt the need to kill the snake, but they did. Poults have everything against them, literally everything.

I wonder if that snake would have eaten that poult had he lived? It's hard to make a living as a turkey, especially a young one.

You got that right.
Snakes are commonly overlooked,
but I suspect they consume more young poults than we might think.

By my observation, Cooper's hawks may be the single-biggest predator of young poults until they're about quail-sized.

May or may not have been that snake's intention when it struck,
but I suspect the snake would have attempted consumption, and probably been able.

I guess I am different. I do not kill snakes, regardless of the situation. They have their place in the ecosystem and they do not seek out and attack people, as much as people will tell you that and want you to believe it. I have never been alarmed/frightened by them, but I do respect them. My .02

I do not kill non venomous snakes but the copperhead or cottonmouth or rattler you let go today may be the one that bites you or another hunter tomorrow. I guess in the grand scheme of things killing one snake here or there won't save anyone. Come to think of it, I haven't seen a poisonous snake in the woods in 10 years. I occasionally see a cottonmouth while fishing but that's it.

That's some seriously bad luck on the turkeys part.

I don't usually kill snakes. I've relocated 2 copperheads from the backyard.

Only one I've killed in the past decade was a juvie cottonmouth in the backyard that struck at me while I was crossing the yard and I didnt see him and walked too close.

He was too defensive to try to relocate, so I felt it necessary to remove his fangs (with the rest of his head) from his body. With 3 little kids playing in the backyard, he had to go one way or another

that's why I rarely ever kill snakes anymore. Killing one isn't gonna save you from another one. And the chances of being bit are very low, and most venomous snakes are not aggressive.
