I don't keep a lot of fans anymore, but I am going to build a barnwood display for my Cabbage Patch turkey that I posted about last week. It was pouring rain when I killed him, so of course he looked like a wet mop. I have never tried to keep a wet fan, but assumed it would dry out on its own and look normal. Not exactly. It's curing now, and it doesn't look as bad as it did, but the feathers definitely dont look pristine even after drying. Are there any tricks to get the feathers back to form?

You might want to put it the fan in large trash bag and pour a cup or two of puffed borax in it and shake it around. Then use compressed air and a old tooth brush to groom things.

Problem is these birds are full of grease/dirt and when wet things get nasty.

Should I wait until it is done curing, or do it now and then spread it back out to dry?

Now. If it's already dried it may not work.

I have regular 20 Mule Team borax. I'm guessing puffed borax is something different?

Yes it's different but that will work. Puffed borax typically dries things out faster.
