When you cut off the beard, what do you guys put on the meaty end of it ? I had some white powder that a taxi gave me years ago but I am out now and need more and never knew the name of it.

I don't cut mine off, I peel them off and the "comb" as I call it comes off clean with no meat. I just lay them out for a few days and it dries rock hard. I then dip them in black wax as over time they'll start to fall apart.

If you cut them, buy some borax from the grocery store, mit will dry them out in no time

Mule team borax from the store. One box will last a life time.

Why cut them off, just give it a good snatch and it will
Pop out. Let it dry and you are good to go

Yep. Just grab it at the base and pull. No meat at all to fool with. I cut the brass off the shell and hot glue the beard inside of it and write the date and county on it.

I always thought it would just fall apart without a little preserved meat around it. I put them in brass also.

Salt dries it out, if all the meat is gone that will work. Borax acts as an insecticide and dries it out as well, as long as all meat and fat is removed they both work.

Point is, NOTHING will work if you leave any fat or meat on it. Borax would in theory be better than salt though.

Salt will work, but I dont use anything. Just cut them off close to the skin and let them dry a week or so and you are good to go.
