Primer availablilty

Was at a shop Saturday and talking to a counter person about the absence of primers at retail. She said she was talking with one of the distributors they deal with about primer availability and was told that primer production is spoken for thru June of next year, when the distributor expected to start seeing shipments from the major manufacturers (Federal, Winchester and cci).

I commented that that was after this years hunting season, to which she replied "how observant of you", "but we are getting more and more loaded ammo"

Guess that's the gameplan, commit all the primers to ammo production this year and sell it at inflated prices, then a gradual drawdown to something loosely resembling yesterdays normal.

With the major inflation going on in the country (despite denial by govt. officials and cooked inflation numbers) prices will never return to pre-C levels, but perhaps availability will be improved.

Is there a covid exemption in place for what was setup to he the MZ season?

I'm sure there's nothing official, but it will be grandfathered in.

There had been being some decent drops a few months back with primers staying stocked for hours. Not happening lately. Glad I bought what I could while I could.

That is the way it has always been reloading components go to ammo manufactures and surplus goes to loaders.

I don't agree with the Doom and Gloom about the supply. If the demand that is driving the current shortage and ridiculous pricing was going to hang on for a few years, manufacturers would be spending the money to bring more presses online. But they aren't. Or at least it doesn't appear they are. They aren't because they know that with increased current production we will soon be knee deep in primers and loaded ammo, that would mean equipment shutdowns and layoffs.

It appears to me 9mm is starting to come back online. Sure, the retailers will stick us to us as hard as they can for as long as they can, but competition will drive prices back down.

Will the prices go back to 2019 prices? Of course not, we have inflation. Plus everyone is trying to make up for Covid caused losses. A buck will never buy what it did in 2019.

Thank you sir, but I've got enough for several seasons. I didn't think I'd ever find any of the 209 magnum primers that have to be used with Blackhorn 209 powder. (A member here was kind enough to share 100 of them with me, and I'll 'owe him one' forever.) Afaik, there's not been any of them for sale, anywhere.
