Im from Arkansas and wanting to come spring turkey hunt this year(2012) in TN. Turkey #'s in Arkansas are very very low(6,000 killed last spring). I'm looking for any advice/opinions on where to hunt public land that will give me the best turkey hunting experience in TN(region I/western region II) I have no access to any private land. Any information would be greatly appreciated and helpful! Thanks, turkman

Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong but I think Chickasaw and Natchez Trace are you two closest nonquota areas, hard to go wrong with either, I don't know much about the trace but I work at Chickasaw, haven't hunted it yet but there hasn't been an area of the forest that I haven't seen turkies on at least once.

Go to TWRA's website and pull the harvest data by county, then look for open WMA's in promising counties. Also, don't overlook National Wildlife Refuges.

If possible, only hunt during the week.

Yanahli WMA is in the middle of the county with the highest turkey harvests (Maury) which is in Middle TN... it's open to statewide seasons, has decent acreage, and got plenty of turkeys. Also it is hunted by a lot of people, so go on odd days, rainy days, or avoid the big chunks of land as they seem to draw more hunters. Also get there before everyone else if you can if doing an early morning hunt.

Turkman, I have tried cheatham wma before and it held alot of birds. Just be prepared to do a lil walking and climbing. It's only a 5 hr drive from northeast Arkansas

Cheatham WMA is a great place. About 21,000 acres and i've rarely hunted there without at least hearing birds. If you go early season,be prepared to see allot of trucks out,and to be competing for birds pretty regularly.

Always seen the most birds on Hallum Rd (I believe it's called).

Try to beat the weekend warriors by going mid week.
