I have a Winchester 70 supershadow 243 wssm that I bought 10 years ago when they first came out. It's the first rifle that I bought myself and it's sentimental to me. It shot moa when it was new and eventually I began handloading for it. I sent several crazy hot 55 grain loads thru it and overall it probably has had 1500 rounds thru it. The throat is starting to show some wear and Ive heard thats common for that round due to high pressures. It doesn't hardly shoot moa anymore, but here's my question: At 200 yards from a bench, why would the cold barrel shots group together 5" right of the bullseye and the warm barrel shots group together 1" right of the bullseye? It seems odd to have over 4" of lateral distance between the very first shot on a cold barrel and the second shot.

cold bore fliers have been debated for years,,myself ,I believe it is a bedding issue and or a barrel that has stress relief issues,,

is it worse from a cold clean bore than just a cold bore,,did it always have this issue or just started and getting worse,,

1500 rounds of hot 55 gr loads would be hard on a factort barrel for sure,,

It hasn't always done it. It seems to be a fairly new issue and I haven't cleaned it since it started this. Can you give an example of the stress relief issue? I haven't heard of that before

How often do you take the action from the stock? Seems like it settles in after a few shots. Also, if the stock was factory bedded the bedding material may have popped loose.

I try not to take the stock off much. But it has been off recently. I don't think it was ever bedded tho. Could I have the screws tightened improperly with too much/too little torque?

If it grouped poorly directly after removing the stock then got better after a few shots it was just the action seating itself in the stock. Don't remove the stock but tighten the action screws as much as you can with a standard length allen wrench. I always tighten the front screw first then the back. Don't tighten the middle screw much tighter than finger tight. And make sure your magazine box is seated and not in a bind. It should wiggle a little with everything tightened down.
