I heard 2 birds gobble a good 50-60 times this evenin from 6-7:15ish. They gobbled at crows, then there's times where they were just gobbling at nothing as far as I could tell. My question is, why will they burn it up at crows and such but not me when I call? Obviously if they're gobbling that much that late in the evening then they're excited, or I'd think. I didn't call loud or too much and I never got a response. I'm not a pro caller by and means but I sound descent, I've called in quite a few over the past 8 years I've been turkey huntin. Since Saturday I've only called in 2 so my confidence in my calling is kinda low I guess. They're not roosted where I can go either so all I can do is just sit and hope they work my way.

It just would not be fun if you could run to the woods and kill a turkey anytime you wish now would it. What you are experiencing is what everybody has had a dose of over the past week.
I was thinking the other day on this subject, ,..But I kinda got it figured out why turkey hunters are so cocky at the start of the season, they know there is a big plate of humble pie waiting for them later on .THINGS WILL GET BETTER when the hens start nesting.

Some of us would have been glad to have see 2 since Saturday. lol good luck with them

Lol it sounds like your doing ok. I'm not sure why they gobble to one thing and not another. I've had them gobble at a crow and not gobble at my crow call

Oh I'm very proud I've killed one but I've seen a lot more and just couldn't do anything with em. I know that's turkey huntin but it's sure frustratin

Just turkeys being turkeys. I had one once that would gobble at NOTHING accept a hawk scream there was this hawk screaming and the dang turkey would gobble every single time but to nothing else.

Turkeys are crazy, nothing more. Nothing they do makes sense some days

In my core area that I hunt I've heard exactly one bird gobbling through the first week. I got a great set up on him, eased out my call and presented him with a very nice 5 note yelp sequence. He never gobbled again! This sort of stuff happens, and there's no rhyme or reason to it sometimes. I suspect my bird was a subordinate bird and assumed I was part of Dads group and he better pipe down before catching a beating.

It's easy for you to blame your calling, but I highly doubt that was your issue. Not be cocky ;) , but I know my way around a turkey call pretty well, and you see how that worked out for me.

I had the same issue this morning. Had one gobble from 6-8 but never at me. Of course it was across the line so all I could do was listen. That's a major down fall when all the land I can hunt is fields and very little woods.

They might have hens and gobbling to try and get more hens

What Catman said. We shot one last Saturday evening that had 4 hens with him but he wouldn't shut up for an hour trying to get some hens down in an open field to come up the hill to him. He made his way back down far enough to get one in the face.

It happened again this morning. One stayed about 100 yards away gobbling at my hen decoys. I wondered why he didn't move in, but then saw he had 3 hens with him. He stood there and gobbled for a good 15 minutes.

I'm gonna stay after em until Tuesday and then I'll be off to work. Sucks the first week was so slow but that's just part of it. Even when they don't do right there's just somethin about a gobble that does it for me, even if it's not at me.
