how far does a turkey usually travel in a day and do they stay around the same spot their whole lives or always on a move. do they usually roost in the same spots or got different spots?
megalomaniac said:In the spring when the big groups break up into smaller subgroups, the birds disperse from a large fall/winter core area.
These small subgroups will then wander around until adequate nesting habitat is found. Once the hens begin to lay, the group will stay fairly localized (usually within 1 sq mile or so).
In my experience, they have multiple (3 or 4) favorite roosting spots, with one or two being used much more frequently than the next two.
Towards the end of the season after the hens have begun to set, the gobblers will then bunch back up and begin to wander (range now expanded to 4 or 5 square miles or so).
In the fall, the gobblers and last years jakes usually remain together in large bachelor groups, while the hens will group up with this years jakes and jennies. These groups can be very, very large depending on poult recruitment from nesting season. They also wander a much larger core area (5 sq miles or so) than in the spring.
