Quick shout out for a nice gun store

I was starting to wonder if I actually liked having a pre-turkey season deal where I wasn't scrambling against time getting a turkey gun sighted in and patterned. A recent post on here of a Weatherby PA-459 turkey gun at 40+% off the retail price caught my attention, as did the weight of the gun. Since I was one up in the selling category and not growing my collection (unwritten agreement with a VERY understanding wife), I decided to try one out.

After making a call or two about getting it shipped in to a local FFL, I decided since I had the day off and the gas up and back might even be a little cheaper than the FFL service charge, I decided to run up to Kentucky Gun Co. in Bardstown and get it from the store. Talk about a first class experience! It was EXTREMELY quick and totally hassle free in dealing with those folks. It couldn't have been a nicer deal with them.

The drive home in 30+mph winds required two hands on the wheel most of the way, but wasn't as bad as anticipated. I did get off in Bowling Green to stop at Cabelas and get their last two boxes of TSS #9 in 3" 12 ga. I have to pick up a choke (and some reels) this weekend up in Kodak that a friend is holding, and then try to find a dry day to do some shooting. I think I can get the scope mounted tonight to be ready for the sight/pattern day.

Nothing like scrambling and the anticipation of playing the turkey game again in a couple of weeks!

I'm pretty sure one of the safe queens will be in the classifieds in the very near future. And, it may open up another one to leave as well. We'll see.

Something to do since fishing is pretty tough right now due to the high water.
 
The beauty of retirement and relishing in the moment leading up to opening day. LBLMan's comment aligns with my hectic life right now, too busy to think straight, so I just have to go with my tried and true 20G.

Thanks for the review scn, I'll try to stop in if ever in that neck of the woods.
 
Good deal. Just shot mine a few times the other day. Getting an early start to the season down in Alabama

My current schedule complicates getting all of this done a little since I am working five days next week and the next couple of days. Hopefully next Thursday isn't a wash out. But, having my 20 ready to go lessens the pressure if it isn't ready opening day.
 
Let me get this straight:

You spent a day procuring a new pump-action 12 ga to set up for turkey hunting
instead of using your lighter 20-ga autoloader already perfectly set up for turkey?

That little 20 Weatherby autoloader would be my 1st choice to lessen the pressure in the first place :tu:

I may end up buying it from you yet :P

We'll see how this one patterns. If the listed weight is correct, and it patterns well, I may not need the 20. Or, I might find a different flavor of koolaid and send the new one down the road.
 
Congrats on the new toy. I'm scrambling as well. Bought a SX3 from Ren and haven't been able to shoot it as I got married back in October and in the middle of moving into my wife's house until we sell mine and build. Can shoot at myhouse but not hers so finally took it ti my house the other day. Still need to add a rear site but 1 shot proved if I miss it's not the guns fault.
 
I actually googled reviews on them prior to entering my credit card. I was worried that it was a scam since the price was so cheap. I ordered on aftermarket choke to try against the factory choke. Let me know how yours shoots.
 
I'm glad I'm not the only one. I have not shot my gun, my wife's gun or my daughters gun. I'm like Andy my schedule is crazy and I have no idea how it got that way. Lol. It will all work out though. Congrats on the new gun.

I would not for my gun because I am overly cautious with it, but it could happen. Back when I was single, not busy, and had a lot more free time, I would check POI before every turkey season, but these past few springs I have just went hunting. So far so good, but in a perfect world where free time was not an issue, I would check POI at least once. I still check POI every year for my MZer and Rifle. With a shotgun, POI could drift a tad and we would never know it, and most likely not cost us the shot. The same cannot be said for a single projectile out of a rifle.

My dad and I check our scoped shotguns every year before season opens. It's not uncommon for either of our guns to be off a small amount.
 
I also do a "check" each year of each turkey gun.
Usually no year to year change (with same loads).

Just saying big difference between a "reassurance check"
and a completely new sighting in of a new gun.
Can be the difference of minutes vs days
or a $5 shell vs over $50 worth of shells.

Probably just me, but sighting in/pattern testing a new turkey shotgun
typically has been much more time consumptive than sighting in/load testing a new rifle.
