Well it looks like its going to be raining Saturday morning. Please give some tips on hunting in the rain. As long as there is no lightning and its not pouring down my son is ready to go.

Get to ur homework quick and find some fields they frequent in the rain. Rainy days equals me huntig a green field. Hope it helps, if it happens to thunder I won't reccomend staying but listen as you are leaving for gobbling everytime it thunders

well it has rained the past 4 openers and i have been 4 for 4 so i think i have a plan :)

look for fields first and foremost! they will be headed to them depending on the amount of rain we get.

Not to hijack ur post but I no when it rains they hit the fields but what makes them do this. I no they say deer do bc they cant determine direction of sound when the rain is hitting all around them but what makes turkey do this?

they do it because a turkeys #1 defense is sight...when it is raining sight is very obstructed as is sound which is why they tend to gravitate to open fields so they have a much larger sight path and sound is not an issue anymore.

also when a turkey is soaking wet flying becomes an issue so the more open terrain gives them a better run for flying or just an area they can run in AND they go to them to dry out after a rain as the sun is full in a field where it is shaded in the woods.

there are some other factors as well but that has a lot to do with it.

thanks. that was what I was looking for. Just was not sure if I should stay on the edge of fields or go into the woods. Being a little selfish I am hoping the rain keeps a lot of people at home so we can move around a bit more on the WMA.

the only down side to rains is it allows the birds to flock back up so the a few days preceding the rains you will have big groups still until they start to spread again. every advantage comes with a disadvantage though. also one thing to keep in mind is if a big rain comes in at night most of the time birds will head to fields first thing in the AM regardless of what their normal pattern is, so they can dry out.

there are even a few theory's that turkeys can sense a storm coming and will roost in different areas due to the storm approaching.
