What is the average range of a turkey?? I see alot in the fall, seen as many as 100, but in the spring they like disappear.

Wish I could state a quantitative figure for their seasonal range but I can't other than...miles. I've seen bachelor groups of toms during winter, that by spring breakup time have spread out dramatically. Same with hens...as they seek out good nesting areas.

Maybe there's been some research online where studies have been completed?

it really all comes down to habitat and surrounding areas as well as food needs.

in some cases it can be very large spanning over miles, where in other areas it can be minimal is any as they dont need to move much to cover all they need with the changing of the season.

I would add terrain to that mix also, as birds can be nomadic in the highlands glideing off one mountain into a valley can cover serveral miles. It might take them days or weeks to make a full circut if good food is availible everywhere and turkeys will eat just about anything. My wife and I watched a big gobbler chase a snake in a dry creek bed last year in early bow season. I wish I could had my cam corder with me because it was halarious. He finaly got the snake cornerd and killed and ate it. It was really something to see.

I see a two different flocks of 30 or so almost every day for a month around both my house and office and then they will disappear for 2 or 3 months and then return. They appear to roam around.

REN,
Tell those longbeards that they aren't allowed to roost on our side then fly down across the river at daylight anymore. :D

I guess I should have included.. Why do they Range?
I know hens look for nesting areas, which I would assume areas that are thick, maybe some tree tops, etc.
It just seems like after the spring break up, they go to another state. Man they can be hard to hunt.!!

I think that I read in one of Lovett William's book where the "home range" of a gobbler is 3,500 acres, a hen, somewhat less. Its no wonder that they come and go so much. That's why I get excited when I see a group, and they happen to be 2 miles from my place. "Sooner or later they'll be on us"!

Yup it all just depends on the habitat and lnd you are on. 2 years ago I randomly had a piebald Tom on the place I hunt. I had not seem him before and only saw him for 3 days then didn't see him again till the end of the season but this time he was a good mile away from my property and the other side of the river.
