Recommend Me a Turkey Gun

Ive been hunting with a 28" 11-87 supermag since I started turkey hunting years ago. I have killed a ton of birds with it, but I am looking for a lighter and better dedicated turkey gun. With the new TSS loads, there's no reason to tote that heave gun. I till probably get demoted to a back up gun. I have no idea what I want. I don't know if I want a pistol grip because I have never hunted with one. I was hoping to find a light gun with a 22-24ish inch barrel That weighs in the 6 pound range I cannot narrow my choices down. The price really isn't a factor. Weight, accuracy/pattern, and reliability are my focus. If anybody has any great recommendations, I am all ears.

Mossberg SA 20 Turkey! 22 inch chrome lined barrel that is drilled and tapped and comes with the rail. Gun weighs 5 pounds and will flat throw a pattern ! I use a Carlsons 575 and TSS #9. I gave up my Mossberg 835 years ago! My gun is called the turkey thug but they dropped the thug from the title. The model number you would look at is 75790. It also comes with fiber optic sights! In the photo the green gun on the right is the SA 20! The Brown is the Tri Star Raptor which is also a great gun but does not come drilled and tapped or with the sights. Just my opinion on a gun I have had for a while and absolutely love e to carry and shoot!

I prefer the pistol grip or a thumb hole stock for turkey guns. It makes holding it up for long periods a lot easier IMO.

Weatherby SA 459 is the ultimate turkey gun in 20ga!! I don't know not one person who hasn't been satisfied with this gun.
Half the price of a Benelli M2.
Next would be Franchi Affinity 3

Just sold a Remington 870 with shurshot stock and probably gonna regret it but wanted to try something else. Went with an SX3 that shoulders really well. Haven't shot it yet but hope to soon.

I've always been a pump guy and killed 99% of my turkeys with a Remington 870. I currently shoot a Rem870 compact 20G with 21" bbl, very compact, lightweight, nimble and easy to maneuver. Never any issues with cycling, firing, ejecting, etc, that you sometimes see with other shotguns. Good luck with your choice.

I've always been a pump guy and killed 99% of my turkeys with a Remington 870. I currently shoot a Rem870 compact 20G with 21" bbl, very compact, lightweight, nimble and easy to maneuver. Never any issues with cycling, firing, ejecting, etc, that you sometimes see with other shotguns. Good luck with your choice.

Thanks for all the feedback. I had thought about the Mossberg SA-20 and the Weatherby SA 459. I was able to put my hands on the SA-20 Saturday. It had the older style peep sight, but it gave me a feel for the gun.

I held a couple compact/youth 20 gauges and they were just too small to get my eye across the top of the receiver. I guess y'all use a red dot or scope on those youth models.

I have leaned back and forth on whether to go to 20 gauge or to stick with a 12 gauge. The SA 459 only has 0.5 pound difference between the 12 and 20. I know the TSS in 20 gauge is more than enough, but I've never been scared of overkill!

Anybody upgraded a M2 or M4 tactical and used it for a turkey gun? They have a pistol grip but the barrel might be a little too short at 18" for getting the needed velocity. A little spray paint and that black gun might make a good turkey gun.

M2 20 IMO is the best option out there. I am a benelli and inertia fan though. Its light, quality made and can be used year around with no issues. It also can be broken down and cleaned SUPER easy. Lots and lots of choke/shell pattern info out there for them as well.

again thats just my option but its one of the best feeling shotguns I have ever shouldered

I found a heck of a deal on the pump wearberby. It'll let me figure out if I like the pistol grip. It's probably not my ultimate solution, but it should get me thru this season and it's 2 pounds lighter than my 1187. If I really like it, I'll probably buy the 20 gauge semi auto version.

Just picked up a new Mossberg 835 today, waiting on my Picatinny mount to come in and throw on my red dot and Indian Creek choke. Should have everything mounted, deep cleaned, and patterned by this weekend. I will post some pics of my patterns. Will be shooting Winchester Longbeards 3' #5.
