Went to turn on my red dot yesterday morning and shoulder my gun as a long beard closed the distance and it was already on and the battery was dead. I just let him go. My mistake and no need to end my year with a miss or a wounded bird. Not digging the red dot. Scope or open sites from now on.

The batteries on a bead never die. But you do have to be careful every time to make sure you are looking straight down the barrel. I still will use the bead, nothing wrong with it, just my personal error that caused missed birds.

Thats why you carry extra batteries, and be concious that you keep it off and that the batteries are working when the time comes. I love red dots.

I agree. You still gotta hold steady. Personally I just like to close my eyes and shoot. :D LOL

From an overall perspective, my preference is a good traditional scope (no or little magnification). I'm using the Burris Fastfire on a particular dedicated turkey gun focusing mainly on light weight.

I too have the fastfire. 3rd season and still strong on same battery. Will change out next year though. When I get out of the truck I always check to make sure it comes on.

The Fastfire (and some more expensive similar ones such as EOTech Holographic) are the only "red dot" type sights I find appealing. Actually, I think they are more properly termed a "reflex" sight as opposed to the much larger-sized "red dot" scopes.

Two questions:
What model Leupold NWTF?
I have a new Mossberg 835 and mounted my EOtech on it, but the scope sits way too high. Does anyone use a cheek rest for this scope/shotgun combo?
