I am new to reloading just starting out. So the question is what is a good powder for reloading 243 ? I will be loading 100gr bullets and will mainly for deer hunting. I got a reloading book but just looking for opinions on what you all have had good luck with.

Re: Reloading powder?

243 can use lots of different powders well, but any flavor of 4350 should work great, along with RL19,17,and 15, either flavor of 4831, Varget, 4064, and, believe it or not, RL22 and IMR 7828. There are plenty of others that I'm not mentioning, as well.

Re: Reloading powder?

When I shot 100 grain Nosler partitions from my 243 I used IMR7828. Nosler #7 shows 41.5----43.5----45.5 as min mid max of IMR7828.
Max load was the most accurate and FPS was 3123. I killed a lot of deer & pigs with this load in California.

Then, 95 Grain Partitions and RL19. My Remmie is still accurate although my 90 grain Accubond load has yet to materialize.

DA---
243 Remington 700 ADL (1985) 1 in 10 twist
RL19
43 grains, 45, 47
Fed 210M primer
R-P brass
90 grain Accubond .007 to .010 off lands

Barrel cold steel clean to begin. 4 fouler rounds 95 gr NBT over 45 gr RL19.

Accubond groups had no discernible pattern, all were over 2" CTC at 100.

Results were so uncharacteristic of this rifle that after first group I checked all screws everything was tight.

Since my eyesight is so miserable i had my Son shoot the next group. He shot, waited, shot, sat and stared through the scope. After a few moments shrgged his shoulders, snugged the rifle up, round 3 downrange. Same kind of result. His comment was "it doesn't like this combination". We set the rifle aside to cool down, fired group 3 about 20 minutes later, same result.

Grabbed my old load of 95 gr partitions on top of 47 gr max load of RL19. 3 quick shots. Back to MOA accuracy.

Did not think a 5 gr bullet weight difference would have such results......Plan is to test other powders-RL15, Varget, IMR4350, Maybe IMR4064.

Or, I might just discard the Accubond approach and roll back to 95 Gr Partitions.

I have yet to load th E-tips.

Partitions have always shot well in this rifle, killed a ton of California piggies and muley's with it. Max IMR7828 was the key, 100 gr partitions.

Re: Reloading powder?

I shot about 30 rounds through my Tac 30 243 bbl today,,it is my favorite gun to just shoot,,I would start with H4350 and if for some reason that didnt get the speed or accuracy I was after I would try IMR4350,RL19 and RL17,,but I cant imagine a 243 that would not shoot one of the 4350s well at good speed with a 90 gr bullet,,I always had good luck with 4064 with the 80-85 gr bullets so that could work also,,

With all of the PRS shooters hoarding H4350, I'm not quite sure where to find it.

Re: Reloading powder?

a couple of the local gun shops around here get H4350 pretty regular,,but IMR 4350 or AA4350 should work ,,as well as anything else between 4064 and 4831,,4320 H414 W760 a lot of these powders are so close that if someone switched them in the cans you would never tell the difference,

the RL17 is getting extra speed than some powders in the 4350 burn rate

also the new IMR4451 is very close to the same thing as H4350

I have no input on the question but I will say welcome to hand loading.

Re: Reloading powder?

I'm a Varget guy and can't tell you sgwat about any of them. I read about guys using it for .308 and thought why not. I wish there was some breakdown that explained the difference but I don't think I will change much now. But I did learn enough from these guys about some tricks, like brass, primers COAL that make big differences in performance and accuracy. Enjoy the ride!

I ended up finding H4350 at a gun club in Indiana today and picked up a pound. I should be loading 6.5 or .260 by the summer.
