Finally got one today around midday, blind called and he came in quiet and gobbled close. I may post the score pics soon, but I expect they will be broken by my next bird, as this is one of my smallest toms ever. No complaints it was a short but great hunt
I killed this guy this afternoon, it was drizzling rain and windy, hardly ideal conditions for most but I knew they would be in the fields. Spotted him after about 30 minutes and a mile walk into the hunt, strutting with a Jake and 8 hens ins a field. I set up on the edge of the field and waited and watched them feed for about an hour. There was a small levee around the field and I found a blow down to set up in. They started working away from me so I said why not but I KNEW in the back of my mind he wasn't leaving those hens. Clucked real soft twice and he came running to the levee. He gobbled a couple of times and strutted, I hit him with a cutt and he flew of the levee to me at about 30 yards, I let his feet hit the ground and his head come up and pulled the trigger so he could do a little flop dance for me. Pressures off now I am beat so far I have hunted 5 days all day and one until 2:00. But I'll be back at it in the morning!
Killed this guy this afternoon after work. Checked out a refuge I had'nt hunted on yet this year, they put gates up at the access point so you have to walk in, which I like a lot, much less pressure on the turkeys. Got to my 2nd favorite spot set up and called a few times over a 45 minute time span and nothing so I trucked on down to my favorite spot. Checked the field out and did'nt see anything, so I started to skirt the field and I see a turkey running down the other side. So I just cut across the corner of the field to get to my spot a big oak I know they roost in and I notice a stump out in the field about 100 yards. It did'nt strike me at first but there's never been a stump in this field but this year its grown up tall full of cockle burrs. So I stop and watch for a long time and it does'nt move so I say no!!! and I start to walk and something says no way. So I watch again and from this angle now I see a turkey fan. So I'm standing there looking around the field am I in someones decoys? Surely someone would have waved me off or are they laughing at me? Then I see the fan moving so I duck down crawl to the edge of the field and watch. Its 3 hens and 2 Toms. They start to the other end of the field so I purred and gave a 2 note yelp and they walked out of site. I'm thinking boy was I dumb I should have never yelped. So I purred a little then gave the assembly call for about a minute and half and he gobbles. I just set the call down and waited, here he come strutting down the field by himself. He stopped about 75 yards out so I just scratched the leaves a little and he strutted the whole way to me. At 35 yards I waited for him to stretch the ol neck out and lowered the boom. Scored a little under 59, he had some beard rot and weighed a little over 20 pound with 1 1/4 spurs, beard was only 7 and half inches long with the rot but it was an easy hunt on public land and they don't always come in strutting so I am well pleased.
