Alabama coach Nick Saban is not pleased with his Auburn counterpart for the events that led to a game-ending Crimson Tide illegal substitution penalty.

With roughly one minute left, Auburn faced a punt on a 4th and 4 while nursing a three point lead. Tigers coach Gus Malzahn admitted that his team had used something of a gambit to try to keep Alabama's dangerous return man Jaylen Waddle from becoming a factor on the return.

Auburn HC Gus Malzahn on the final punt that never happened: "We were trying to keep their punt returner off the field. We put our punter at the X, and we were gonna shift to get a punt without him out there."

This did not go over well with Saban, who felt the trick was "unfair."

Essentially, Malzahn and his staff lined their punter up as a wide receiver, and the Crimson Tide were caught flat-footed when trying to get the right personnel on the field. The crux of Saban's argument seems to be that he didn't get a fair shot to make his own substitutions.

Auburn lined up the punter at wide receiver to try to keep Waddle on the sideline. Bama noticed it late and took a penalty in the confusion. So simple, but so smart by Malzahn. Took the game straight out of Bama's hands

This was far from the only thing that went in Auburn's favor and upset Saban on Saturday. Alabama's mistakes cost them the game, and it looks like this was just clever strategy on Auburn's part.

I've got no problem with Gus's call -- he's known for his slight-of-hand and this one caught both our coaches and players off guard. Sad that it ended that way, but that's the way things roll sometimes.

Nothing wrong with that play. You can can line up any player any where. Turned out it was a genius play. Used to, QB's would punt sometimes to try and catch team off guard.

Lil Nicky is just a sore loser. Looking to blame anybody and anything.

I'm sure if saban is upset about it, NCAA will change rules, punters playing against AL only wont be allowed to run the ball or pass the ball or line up anywhere but behind the center and kick.

I'm sure Saban feels like the refs were supposed to stop play like they did when TN shifted into the wildcat on their goal line to let them get ready.
True.probaby would have if they was at home.

That last play was obviously designed to do exactly what it done. It was one of those things that if it worked, then they won the game and fans would rush the field like it was a natty championship. If it didn't, it would have been one of those stupid plays that the Barners would have been calling for Gus's head again.

Back in the early war days, when they would line up toe to toe and shoot into huge columns and regiments of men, it was saw as unfair and uncivilized if you used "guerrilla warfare" and was highly frowned upon. The big giants like the British wanted people to go toe to toe with them. The smaller armies couldn't afford to do that, so guerrilla tactics were often used....ambushes, raids, snipers, etc. That's kinda how I see Auburn vs Bama. Gus always has to resort to some kind of trickery to try and gain an edge. Sometimes it works and you're the hero...sometimes it's like that play they did last year in the Iron Bowl that flopped.

Trick plays if that is what it was is part of football . No big deal in my book .

According to Saban and Jones post game interviews they recognized what they were seeing and just could not get Waddle off the field in time .

It is what it is .
