What would be a good stand with a nice wide platform for a bowhunter to stand up and shoot? I'm open to all styles and brands.

Summit stands are really stable.

Do you have a fear of heights or anything of that nature? I ask this because I can't stand to hunt out of a open front stand...

fear of heights is not really it. More of a fear of stepping off the stand while drawing back on a deer because I shoot with my feet kind of wide apart.

I love my summit Viper. It does have the bar across the front but only had two times that the bar got in the way of shooting. The first time was when I tried to shoot a recurve out of it and the 2nd I had to stand on my toes to keep the bow from hitting the bar when shooitn an 8 point at 4 yards.

Whatever stand you get put it low on tree close to the ground and practice. You can also get a chair or stool and practice shooting sitting down. When you shoot from the stand 20 or 30 feet in the air your trajectory will be different. Good Luck
Also make sure you get a good safty harness. Most the ones that come with a stand are low end.

Ditto what bobthebowhunter stated. Personally, using a harness is comforting and eases my fear of accidentally stepping off the platform.

For bowhunting I use the Summit Razor. It is the exact same as the Viper, except instead of having a solid rail surrounding you like the Viper has, it has a collapsable bar that leaves it open in the front. I changed because there was several situations where the bar interferred with the position I needed to be in. You can be the top seperately from Summit.

A safety vest, make that a good safety vest is a must. I have an ole man I just got last year and really like it. Very comfortable. I also have a summit but it is a little clunky.
