Well I guess some of them are gettin it going. I watched a big gobbler, with two more along side of him hoping to cut in, breed a hen today. He sure did. What a show. I am in N. Hickman

I have heard several different opinions on this and it is interesting to me as how it will affect the season in April.

While I can't remember where I read it, hens have the ability to store semen for 60-70 days without actually laying an egg. As I understand there can be quite some time between breeding/copulation, producing a full clutch of eggs, incubation, and hatching.

My guess is that things are right on schedule but it will be a little while before laying begins.

Decades of biological research shows that breeding takes place well before what we hunters consider the season. I have been in Miss for opening weekend many times and found hens sitting on nests with 10+ eggs in them. I have found the same thing here in TN during our opening week as well.

Not all animals/birds will be bred or do their breeding at the same time, the survival of the species requires that they spread out their timing to avoid a total collapse due to freak weather events etc.

Hens can store semen for a couple years.
