Heard 3 longbeards this morning. When one group of birds flew down there were 2 longbeards, about 5 jakes, and about 5 hens in the bunch as they landed in the middle of the field. One hen in particular was really loud mouth. They pretty much just hung out in the middle of the field until I had to leave. When trying to get these birds to come to me, do I try to fire up the boss hen when she hits the ground and get her to come in close? Or do you try another strategy? Just wondering how you guys deal with birds in this situation?

Also, I dont own a blind so a blind in the middle of the field wont work for me.

Well bvoss you are in luck! I just happen to have 2 blinds and you can borrow one. The only catch is that I go where the blinds go. LoL!!!! I would try to get that OL boss hen worked up. You need her to come to you and the rest should be right behind her. Otherwise she will either lead them away or they may just stay out in that field for hrs. You could also try some decoys if you choose.

If you don't own a blind, your best strategy is to know where they go when they leave the field. Hopefully, they are a nice, easy group of birds to hunt and they leave the field at the same time everyday, using the same route everyday.

However, birds are starting to break up and disperse so all bets are off. But given the size of this flock, there's a good chance they will be together for the next couple of weeks.

Also, what type of field is this? How tall is the vegetation? Any isolated pockets of cover in the field? A popup blind would be best, but there are other more creative ways of dealing with these kind of birds.

As bigasports points out, decoys could be a good option. If I were going to use decoys, I would want to put out 4-6 hen decoys and a couple of jakes. In this situation, you are betting on social curiosity. That is for those hens to go, "where'd that flock of birds come from. I better go over there and check them out." I have never had calling to a hen work, even though I have had some very long conversations with very vocal hens. But, the decoy spread has worked for me before.

LOL thanks bigasports! We have to for sure get together and go this year. Also, WMAn, the field is a clean 10 acre hay field and the grass is maybe 6 inches in height.
