Scouted public land in Middle TN today

First gobble at 6:15 am

I started the morning at a roost I have scouted twice in the last two weeks (once in AM, once in PM). The turkeys roost on two high points overlooking a large bottom. The last morning I scouted here, they flew down and moved up the holler and away from the bottom. Today, they did the opposite. The birds here gobbled suprisingly well for this time of the year. At 7:00, I had a group of 4 longbeards move down the holler all the way to the bottom and then back were they came from. The group of 4 were gobbling the entire time. I was surprised to see 4 longbeards with no jakes or hens.

At 8:00 I moved to a second location. At 8:30, I had a hen yelp and two gobblers immediately responded. I snuck within sight of the gobblers and watched them from 8:45 to 9:20. During that time, they strutted and gobbled alone on the end of a ridge. At 9:20, a third gobbler joined in and possibly some other birds. The group then left.

I'll be back out again in the morning to fine tune my plans for this weekend.

catman529,

I was on public lands in middle TN. That is as specific as I get. I know you are new to turkey hunting and that you will be hunting on public land. I wish you the best of luck.

All of my hunting (turkey and deer) is done on public lands. I do not share the specific WMAs, NWRs, or other public lands that I hunt on public forums.

I spend a lot of time identifying public lands to hunt and then scouting specific places on those public lands so I don't advertise what I know and where it's at.

Aldo Leopold in A Sand County Almanac bemoaned the fact that information on hunting hotspots is so readily available. His point being that people don't have to work to find them. He was writing this in the first half of the 20th century. The problem has only gotten worse.

Just my 2 cents. I'll step off my soap box now. :)

Awesome, that sounds like a great scouting trip to me. I hope you tag one of them opening weekend. Good luck.

Thanks Andy.

I don't get first shot at them though. I have a prospective client, whose two boys are new to hunting. I am taking the both of them this weekend to try for their first birds.

That is awesome. I would rather see any kid kill a turkey as me or any adult for that matter. I really hope you all connect this weekend, post some pics if so. Best of luck to you all.

Andy,

You actually know these boys. I deer hunted with their father at Ames twice last year. And, your right. I have basically blown off work all week because I am working so hard to help them kill their first.
