After helping my buddy out and roosting some birds so he could take Tate and help him get his first Turkey (which he did) I figured I had better start looking for another spot in case that one falls through. I did some research on the computer and located a couple of likely places. The first one I went to took an hour to walk back into, way back into the mountains. There was scattered sign along the way, a few fresh scratching and some really fresh Gobbler tracks. I finally made it to where I was going to have to turn back. Still hadn't heard a peep out of a bird yet, really windy. I tried a couple of series of crow calls.. nothing. Couple of owl hoots.. nothing. Just for kicks I pulled out a diaphram and hit a couple of cutts and some yelps. Bam!!!! Immediate answer. I logged his location in my GPS and waited around for a few minutes. A few crows flew over and were really vocal.. nothing. Hit a couple of cutts again and He about blew my hat off!! I ran out of there like a scalded dog!! lol Heard 2 more birds on the walk back to the truck, one of them only about 1/4 mile from where I parked. I marked both their locations. It finally felt good to get some birds located.

Here is my disclaimer... I don't normally go through the woods calling but since the sign was so scattered I was just seeing if anything was around. I know it's a rookie move.

And it is illegal, sounds like you were on public land and if I am not mistaken it is illegal to call within a certain number of days before the season opens.

Just something to keep in mind in the future. Good luck with the birds this weekend.

No I wasn't on public land and I apologize if I gave you that impression. I have permission to hunt .. I guess the best way to describe it is a "cove" that is owned by a friend of mine's grandfather. I know that it is illegal to call on a WMA after March 1st... what you do on private land is your own business. Not being a smart alec here but I am aware of the law.

After reading my original post again I guess it was my fault for giving that impression. When I said that I did some research on the computer.. It was beause I was trying to find a way to access this property. He doesn't own the front part of the cove.. only the back starting at almost the base of the mountain and goes up almost to the top. The only way to access by vehicle is either with a 4 wheel drive or 4 wheeler.. which I don't have ether. I was checking to see if there was an easier way in from the top or was I going to have to hoof it all the way in.. I had to hoof it.

I got no issues with anyone being a smart alec, and glad you were able to find a few birds to chase.
