Scrapes

Early September, right around antler velvet shedding. But the majority of traditional scrape in my area don't open up until right around Oct. 1.

Now that doesn't mean deer don't visit them earlier. A scrape appears because the licking branch above it is there. Licking branches are used year-round. Put a camera on a traditional scrape and you'll get deer working the licking branch at any time of year.

Yep, and does check them too. Territorial scrapes by bucks start getting worked here mid to late September.

August 31st I found around 8 very small ones in a bedding area. These type scrapes are made randomly by bucks just feeling that testosterone building up in them and they'll feeling spry. That sign usually doesn't translate to usable hunting intel come fall from my experience unless you happen across a community scrape in this scenario.

Just making sure we are all on the same page. When you guys say scrape, you're referring to leaves raked back on the ground, with bare dirt exposed, correct?

Some guys call rubs on trees 'scrapes.'
