I like to pick up random stuff that looks like it would have a good surface similar to a slate, and see what sound they make. Anything that sounds decent, I would carry into the woods if it was pocket sized and made a really good sound. But I am inexperienced as far as actually calling turkeys. However it's fun to take a striker to random objects and see what sounds you can make. I love the sound of my little scrap of 2 x 4 inches of slate.

Had a buddy come up one morning to camp and had forgotten his calls. We all tried to get him to use one of our extras but he wouldn't have it lol so he found an old saucer plate and put his striker to it and sounded purdy good. Lo and behold he killed a two year bird that morning too

Sounds like it would make a great story any time..."I brought in this gobbler on a piece of trash I found in the woods" and if people don't believe you, let them hear it for themselves. Almost makes me want to find a piece of trash just to say I hunt turkeys with it

A styrofoam dixie cup makes a pretty good sound if you rub your thumbnail against it just right. Its not consistent but I think i could kill one with it.

Thats cool, what side of the cup do you rub and do you drag your thumbnail up and down or left and right or use the back of your thumbnail?

If it were more consistent, a straw in a to-go cup sometimes sounds like a wingbone call.
