Day #15 of adult turkey season here in MS. I've been in the woods at least a portion of 11 days.

56.5 miles so far on the boots. I've struck 6 gobblers (way worse than my usual average of 1 bird for 5 miles), but 5 out of 6 have come into gun range (way better than my long term average).

Should have watched one die this morning, but he outflanked us. I went with a friend to a 700ac private farm weve hunted in years past. My friend was the shooter, and we covered 4.5 miles before we stumbled into a birds bubble and he crushed a lost call only 100yds away from us down a logging road from the small plot we were in. We ran to where the road meets the plot and covered ourselves. One soft 3 note yelp and he hammered back again 50yds away around the bend in the road. I told my friend to get ready, hes coming right down the pipe. 30s later and he sees him cross the road 25yds away and into the thick underbrush to our left. Another 90 seconds and I look over my shoulder and hes 7 yards away directly behind us in the thick stuff. He clucks once, then putts once, and starts easing off. No way for my buddy to swing around with me behind him, and my gun is laying on the ground. I ease the power on the sight, then raise and swing my gun toward him hoping he would keep easing off and I'd get a shot, but he immediately took flight over a bluff and down to the river. Jeez, 3.5 hours of hiking for a 3 minute hunt, and didnt even get to put hands on him afterwards. A hard kick to the crotch would feel better than this mornings escapades.

I'm taking the rest of the day off, but going back to national forest tomorrow with my son to see if the bird we were on yesterday is in a more loving mood.

We actually had our first tom show up on our lease. I got a single pic of a 2yo on a plot 2d ago, but wasn't able to locate him yesterday afternoon. Many of our hens have started setting, so the Tom's are on the move searching prerry hard right now.
