I made 3 calls to the bird I killed today over a 20 minute period, he covered 150 yards or so before dying at 15 yards
You have always been a big proponent of getting as close as possible before you ever call, which I totally agree with; that is exactly how I hunt and I too mainly hunt hardwoods. Just wondering what was the case today? 150 yards seems a little far for woods environment with excess foliage like we have here. Is it the mountains of east TN that makes 150 yards about as close as you can do without bumping him or what? Just trying to better understand your unique situation today as close in my neck of the woods is 80 yards or so. Thanks in advance.

I was worried about not judging distance correctly because of the hurricane wind. I played it safe to make sure I didn't bump him.

When I deal with birds who have hens I will sometimes be a little less bold with my proximity to the bird. Hens scatter all out in around a gobbler, and he may be at 75 but his hens may be at 30, and can spoil a hunt if spooked.

I love to get ultra close but each situation can vary, and sometimes 150 yards is good while others getting inside 50 is called for.
