Here is my first bow kill and my second deer ever. I decided this February that to increase my chances I needed to overcome my fear of heights, get a climber, get a bow along with all the stuff that goes with it, and ask alot of questions from the guys on TN Deer. All of the stupid questions and everyone's patience paid off this morning at 6:40. There were deer all around when I got settled in before daylight. My hunter partner was Knothead and we started texting about all the deer we were hearing and I knew this was going to be my morning. I knocked my arrow tipped with a Rage 2 blade and immediately heard a good size deer crashing through the under brush. It walked right past my stand at 15 yards but it was too dark. Another deer appeared to my left but wasn't in the lane. Deer were coming in behind to go to their beds. Then, through 5 minutes of heart pounding, I looked up and this guy was in the lane at 25 yards. I knew he was past the spot I had shot at 20 yards with my range finder, so all the practice paid off and instinct kicked in. He was looking at me, I was looking at him, drew, settled my top pin (20 yards) on his back, and let her fly. I nailed him so hard Knothead thought the crack was a big limb that fell. He was about 60 yards away. I had the shakes but I forced myself to breath slowly to prevent hyperventilation. I knocked another arrow, waited for about 30 minutes, and climbed down. I found my arrow on the ground covered in bright red blood and both Rage Heads deployed. I had a complete pass through. I only had to walk 18 paces from the impact spot to find him piled up. I thought he was a doe, but I waited along time for this oppotunity and am not ashamed of this button buck. I want to avoid harvesting the little ones, but today was my day and no one can take that away from me forever.
Thanks Knothead for helping me clean him up and thanks Secret Squirrel for giving me all the crucial info here in the last few days. JayMc, thanks for introducing me to 3D and helping me learn about archery, and Radar thanks for always giving your short but effective answers. Thanks everyone else for your help.
