I just can't get the hang of these stupid fish.

Few weeks ago I found a bed and the fish were actually spawning.
The female would lay sideways and just quiver and the male would rush in and hover above her.
Then he would leave and she would right herself.
Neither would bite anything I threw at them.

Today we found a big set of beds.
BIG shellcracker everywhere.

They were just hangin out but they wouldn't hit anything.
All appeared to be female but they weren't really "on" the beds, just hangin out.

Literally hit them in the mouth with the bait and nothing, they would just back away from it.

I just don't understand these stupid fish.

My brother inlaw caught all males 1 week all females the next and now a mix and they are scattered out, reckon they are about done spawning here

Try a whole nightcrawler hooked twice in the head leaving rest of the whole worm dangling. If you can drop ti directly into a bed 99% of the time they will attack it wiggling and writhing in the bed.

Funny how some folks call em bream. Like most anybody, I've caught bluegill on every sort of bait, lure, popping bug, etc...at all depths, 12 months out of the year......but shellcrackers are no bluegill, that's for sure.
