Well, I pulled the sights off of my bow today. Couple of reasons, first, the plastic TruGlo sights were messing up where the pins go. Plastic just doesn't hold up to being tightened against metal for very long. Second, I was getting tired of having to move the pins all the time to get things dialed in constantly.
My first two compounds were shot instinctively and that's how I shot my recurve and longbow. Well, guess what. Within just a few shots I cut a 3", 4 arrow group dead center of the 6" bull on my target at 10 yards. I know, 10 yards isn't anything to brag about but I've not shot instinctively in years. I guess it's like riding a bicycle or something.
Back up to 20 yards and after a few shots to get my brain back in gear(remember, it's a hand/eye kind of deal) I hit the bull dead center 2 out of 4 shots and the flyers only missed by a few inches, not any worse then I did WITH sights.
It'll just take practice and I know I'll be back on target without the need for sights and if you think I'm kind of an "odd ball" for shooting a compound bow without sights, ol' Uncle Ted did it for years.
I'll keep using my release, love the clean release you get from it, much better then finger style but as for sights, I'd rather be free of em' and let my brain help me to make the shot rather then trust something like a pin.
Guess there's just some habits that are hard to break.

People thought I was an odd ball because I used a release with my recurve and a loop. I could get a good anchor point when i used a release and I shot really well. I do whatever is best for me even if it seems silly to someone else.

You know, I was actually thinking about using a release wit a loop if I ended up with a recurve. Seems like it'd give you the best possible release of the string. I was also thinking about using sights on a recurve but since I've pulled em' off of my compound and shot and done pretty much just as good(maybe a bit better) I really don't think "I" need sights. The I is in quotes for emphasis, I've got all of my life instinctively so it's natural to me, others who've only used sights should probably stick with em' since it's taken me years of shooting to get my "eye' dialed in to shooting instinctively.

I have stripped my bow down this year also. I have been shooting instinctive all winter. My bow is much lighter and quiet. I am determined to follow through and hunt this coming deer season with a bare bow. It is just a personal challenge.
Good luck with the new style of shooting.

Hey, if Tim Wells can do it, we can do it. Not sure when sights were invented for bows but I'm sure it wasn't that long ago, maybe 50 or 60 years. Look at how long bows were used before sights and how much game had been killed. I guess some people have the knack for instinctive shooting and others don't. If someone can't shoot instinctive then by all means use sights but a bare bow is a lot lighter and easier to shoot IMHO. Glad to see I'm not the only one on the forum that likes to shoot instinctive.

Well, I'm making progress. I can cut 3" at 10 yards pretty regular and cut 6" out to 20 yards pretty regular. I'm going to work at 20 yards for a couple days until my brain gets use to that distance then I'll move back to 25 yards and shoot for a few days to get the feel for it.
It really is a lot like throwing a ball. Not that hard at all, of course instinctive is how I've shot all my bows since the age of about 15 so I'm use to it but having not shot in a few years it does take a little practice to get things back up to snuff.
If I can get 6", 4 shot groups at 30 yards I'll be pleased as punch. Just need to keep on practicing until it happens.

P.S.
Does anyone else just think it makes sense to be shooting a Team Fitz bow instinctively, LOL.

Went out and practiced just a little bit this afternoon. Had one group of 3 arrows in about an inch at 10 yards. The ol' eye is coming back. Won't be too long until I'm cutting 3" 30 yard groups again, this time instinctively.
