I shot at a bird that I thought was closer than he was. He was with 3 other longbeards. Do they remember that and stay away for a while? Should I not hunt that area for a little while and try somewhere else? What is the protocol?

Go back after them, turkeys are dumb. Unless they've been shot at a bunch it won't matter to them.

I missed one Saturday. Giving him a break for a day or two, then I'll try him again. If you have other turkeys to hunt, it wouldn't hurt to let the place rest a day or two. But in general turkeys slend most of their lives getting scared/almost killed by things. He'll get over it pretty quick.

Last year my cousin "missed" a bird moving from his left to right. The following weekend he killed a bird in the same spot moving from right to left. When he cleaned the bird he found shot in both sides. He didn't miss the weekend before. He just didn't kill him. It only took a week for that bird to be back in the same spot looking for a hen. They only have one thing on their mind and they forget quick.

Are you sure that it was a clean miss? Like Spurhunter mentioned, he may have taken some pellets.

If you have opportunity, I'd go back and walk the path that he went. I hit a bird one year that was able to take flight, but not very high. I knew he was hit. My heart sank as he flew out of sight. However, I walked that way just in case he might have hunkered down once landing. I was at the edge of a field, and when I came to a pretty thick patch of briers, I walked around it checking. I just saw the tip of a tail feather. He was dead and had dived into that brier bush.

As far as the others, it sounds like they are ready to die and are probably back there now.
