Was hunting today and had a gobbler with 4 hens going past me gobbler was 3rd in line going behind brush. I shot 3rd bird but turned out the last hen passed him. Honest mistake. Should I keep quite or self report? And no not in Tennessee, alabama. :bash:

You might as well turn yourself in since you posted it on an online forum. That sucks though

Unfortunately it does happen. However, one of the first rules of hunter safety is making sure of your target. If you don't the difference in a hen and a gobbler, give up the sport. One has essentially a colorless head, and the other has a bright red, white, and blue head. Also gobblers are twice the size of hens.

This is exactly why fanning is so dangerous there are sadly hunters who just brush shoot at what they assume rather than confirming a target.

I hope you get hammered by the Al dnr, that'll teach you to be more careful. Hopefully saving hens and humans lives in the future.

that's a little over the top for a simple mistake. Yes it could have been avoided but don't compare it to shooting another person. If a humans head had popped out from behind the bush I don't think he would have shot. And you win the record for bringing up the fanning debate in as many threads as possible.

Sure it's harsh, but tell me I'm wrong? In understand one getting caught by a stray pellet but shooting a hen outright should never happen.

you're right it should never happen. But it's not the worst mistake to make in the woods, and I would think he will be more careful in the future whether or not AL busts him for it.

100% agree.... Know your target period.

I'm sure this was just an April Fools joke to begin with.... hope so anyway.

i think Settermans point is the fact that you should know your target period. The difference in a tom and hen head is very obvious and it is also obvious the OP was shooting at a target he was unsure of given the fact he had a point of time where he did not see both the Tom and the hen passing him and shot at an object that came into a window without making sure it was infact the correct target.

that IS how people get shot each year.

ok he did make a mistake that none of us should make, BUT I don't see how that correlates to shooting another hunter, he was about to shoot in that direction whether the bird was a hen or a gobbler, so if a person had been downrange that would have been a completely different issue.

So is it an April fools joke or not???
