I went shooting with a couple of my buddies today that I turned on last spring to Hevi-Shot loads. Now they both killed a bird using the Hevi-Shot last year and were sold on it. So we patterned our guns. Mark just recently bought a Moss 835 that I talked him in to buying. I gave him a Pure Gold .670 choke just a few days ago that shot great for me. I gave him some of the Hevi-13 1.75oz #6 loads and using that Pure Gold choke he put an unheard of 234 shot in a 10" at a tape measured 40yds. I personally have not seen that load shoot better. Heck last year I put what I thought was a great pattern with of 243 shot with the Hevi-13 3.5" 2.25oz #6 in a 10" at a tape measured 40yds out of my 835 and MAD Max .680 choke. And he dang near did as good with a lot lighter load. I was impressed. Anyway him and his son are all dialed in. I'll try and get a picture later of his pattern.

I shot a few decent patterns. But then I told them I'll put the Star Dot choke back in my 835 and shoot 1 shell of the Hevi-13 3.5" 2.25oz #7 out of my 835 with the great shooting lot #300325 that I showed them patterns from last year. Anyway here's the results. This should show most folks why I shoot 7's out of the 835 with the Star Dot choke. This is my personal best. Temp was about 75 degrees. Again this was a tape measured 40yds from tip of choke to cardboard. I have my TruGlo red dot sight about deadnut. There's way over 100 shot inside the head and neck. I think there was 30 shot in just the vertebrae and skull area.

Now here's the backside so you can see how ate up and tight it was and how that shot blew plum through very easily the cardboard and burried into a hard stump. Only about 10 shot didn't penetrate completely through the cardboard. And remember that's because there was all wood behind the center of the cardboard. Maybe this will finally convince the doubters that 7's has what it takes to kill a turkey very easily at 40yds and then some.

How many shells do you have left out of that lot #? How much better is lot #300325 compared to other lot # 2.25oz #7s or have you even tried any other lot #s out of the Star Dot to make that comparison? Just wondering if it is a 5% difference, a 20% difference or what?

Andy,

I may be wrong. I just checked the box and I might have mixed them. But it might have been lot #300525 or it was 300325. One or the other. I have like 8 shells left of both these lot #'s

But more than likely it was 300325 and I mixed them with what I thought was the same lot but was 300525. Hope that makes sense.

It really sucks that different lot #s shoot so different in those 7's.

Well I'm here to tell you that all lot #'s will for the most part shoot different in any shells.

That is what I was getting at with my original question. Are different lot #s in Hevi #7s really so different or just a little different from your experiences? I do not know as I have never shot them, just wondering. There will always most likely be some difference between any and all lot numbers, regardless of shell/make/brand. Some not so much, some more so than others. The only way to know for sure is to shoot them and see.

Your exactly right Andy. Same goes for rimfire and centerfire factory ammo.

300325 has been the best shooting lot I have found Andy. Other guys have said great things as well with their results.

I really wanted to get into the 300 club with the 7s
Did you polish your barrel before that 286? If not, it could be the extra umph you are looking for to achieve your personal goal. I have read where most guys increase their pellet count 10-15% by polishing. I even read where one guy said his count went from 229 to 311, a 35% increase. Best of luck with your goal.

Well i got 286 out of lot 300514. 10 more than the Mag blends out of the same gun. I really wanted to get into the 300 club with the 7s

That lot # is almost as good as the 300325. My 870 shoots about 320-330 with 300325 and about 310 with the 300514.

Johnny,

What kind of gun are you shooting and what barrel length and shells?

My 835 is a 28" barrel. I polished myself using my own little method or I should say sort of.

i think the lot number debacle is someone being overblown. Yes each shell is different no matter who makes them but in reality will 286 vs 320 kill a turkey any different? mostly likely not, but it does to killing a paper target.

granted I try to get all my ammo in the same lot numbers but i try to do with any ammo really just to limit the areas of change.

Browning BPS with a 26" Barrel. Rhino Choke, Hevi 7's, Mag Blends and Nitro H510c. It shoots great just didn't get my 300 :(

Here's the patterns
Patterns

As REN already stated, the point is moot whether your talking about 286 or even 340 shot. The bird is still going to be just as dead.

Don't know the choke diameter on your Rhino choke, but I can tell you through experience that the Browning .742 Invector Plus barrels seem to like about a .675 choke to maybe even a .670.

I shoot them before they get that close. And if one does I'll let him get out a tad bit. But typically if you set up right you won't have to worry about that.

I never thought I would be using #7's until I started testing Hevi #7's last year. Now I wouldnt use anything else.I feel very comfortable at longer ranges now if I have to do that. I have no idea what my lot number I have right now is.

Great pattern, but how in the world would you ever hit one at 10 or 15 yards with that tight of a pattern?

MOST chokes even standard FULL ones will be SUPER tight at 10yds....people for some reason seem to forget that fact.
