A few years back #2 shot was banned for use on turkeys because someone was mistaken for a turkey and shot (really don't know how this could happen when BEARDED turkeys are all that is legal in spring hunting).

Up until it was banned, I always used #2 shot. Are you less dead if you are killed with #4 shot than with #2 shot? I know #2 shot will travel farther and have more KE but with the new "Hevi Shot", is it any safer?

What are your views?

i know i don't want to be shot with any shot size, so no don't think it is any safer, of course it depends on the distance, but still

I am with matthews338, I don't want any of it. One of the guys I hunt with alot is an eye surgeon, and the prognosis is, they will all mess you up. If I am blind I would rather be dead, so bring on the 2's.

I think we'd have more hunters injured and killed if more hunters were using larger sized shot. I'd also expect more crippled birds that die, not to say an EXPERIENCED turkey hunter couldn't do well and be safe with large shot. But it's the inexperienced one who would probably be using the most of it IMO, and more encouraged to take longer shots at less defined targets.

And if shot larger than #4 were allowed, what about the "heavier than lead" that's larger than #4? That would REALLY pack some down-range energy per pellet.

I do agree that a #4 "hevi" may have a similar range and penetration down-range to a #2 lead. But sure would hate to have some turkey hunter send a load my way of either. Personally, don't see myself ever wanting to hunt with anything larger than #5's.

Interesting.........I tend to think there would be fewer crippled birds with larger shot. If I remember correctly, the reason for banning #2 lead shot was because the president of the Wild Turkey Federation in TN goofed and shot his hunting buddy while using #2 shot and then lobbied to get it changed to #4 shot or smaller. Guess he was inexperienced or ???????

I am not trying to get #2 shot legalized again but really don't see any problem with it. The modern #4 and #5 shot will probably outshoot the old #2 shot anyway, especially the new hevi shot.
Most turkey hunters don't even remember when #2 shot was legal.

Sorry, I can't let that statement go unchallenged. Your memory on the hunting incident is incorrect. Ed Smith, who at the time may have been the state president of the NWTF, and who gave a great deal to the sport of turkey hunting was the hunter that was shot. I believe the person that shot Ed may have been tresspassing on the property when he shot Ed. I hate to see a fine person like Mr. Smith besmirched with such a comment.

The challenge of turkey hunting for me is not just killing a turkey. The challenge lies in calling a bird into reasonable shotgun or bow range and cleanly killing the bird. IMO, turkey hunters need to concentrate on their hunting skills to get birds in and not try to use large shot as a crutch for the inability to call one in. Unfortunately, there are a large number of accidents in turkey hunting across the country. As a turkey hunter, I am not in favor of making the sport any deadlier than it is already.

There you have it, I agree 100%
Its not how far you can kill one, its how close can you get him to come????
Dont get me wrong, i do everything in my power to have the deadliest weapon I can muster in my hands, but its the closer shots that impress me much more than my longer ones!

man i could not agree more...not to open a box of worms but it also seems there is a movement to come up with more and more stuff to shoot further with more power to compensate for hunters who cannot bring them in close. the new technology coming out for chokes/guns/ammo and decoys is amazing to say the least but IMO (bash away) it is all to coming out to allow hunters to get away with not being able to call or learn how to turkey hunt they way it is suppose to be (suppose to be is in the eye of the beholder obviously so i am not bashing others for they way they choose to hunt turkeys just giving my opinion)

If you were to poll all the VERY good turkey hunters you know or that are out there i would say most if not all agree that CALLING in the bird is the challenge they seek not the actual kill.

again I am not bashing anyones preference on how they hunt turkeys, just giving my own personal opinion.

SCN: I do not know Mr. Smith nor was i trying to discredit him.....I do remember that there was an hunting accident involving the president of the NWTF in TN and very soon after that incident, there were some changes in the regulations because of that. I just wonder if it had been you, me or another hunter, would anything been done.

BTW, I do not use "larger shot" as a crutch. I use the largest legal shot size because I believe it makes the cleanest kills. Most of the turkeys I kill are within 35 yards. I hunt turkey because I enjoy it second only to archery deer hunting. I don't hunt from a blind or just sit and hope a turkey will come within range. That would be no fun.

I really, really, really, don't care that #2 shot is no longer legal but if it was, I would use it because I like(d) it.
