Here in NY, the majority of the southern portion of the state is shotgun only. I have hunted for nearly thirty yrs with a shotgun.
I have 4 different makes and models that I use, depending on where I hunt.
I have a New England Arms 12ga. with rifled bull barrel - tack driver, a Rem. 11-87 w/Hastings cantilevered barrel - tack driver, Browning A-5 smooth bore and an Ithaca Deerslayer smooth bore. I have killed deer with everyone of them out to 100 yds. the two rifled barrels have reached out past 150 more than once, One shot/One kill.
The ammo is the secret, I have tested many different brands and have found what shots the best in each gun, two will only group with Remington (folster style) slugs (the smooth bores) the NE Arms Remingtom solid copper sabots and the 11-87 with Brenneke heavy field magnums.
Actually, I have killed more deer with shotguns than rifle.
