Hiked in this morning to one of my haunts high up on a mountain side. My butt hit the leaves to listen about 6:20 est and immediately a bird gobbled 300 or so yards out a point in the pitch black. This bird proceeded to unleash flurries of gobbles non stop for 15 minutes. I usually wait to let things unfold more but decided no matter what he was probably a player. I eased his way and found him down in a fairly deep hollow and with the wide open woods didn't dare get closer than 150 yards before setting up. First call he ate alive, gave him a few minutes and flew down with my wing, to which he unloaded again. He hits the ground probably 100 yards straight down the mountain and I'm thinking this is a lay up. Well quickly I realize he's flanking me by using the drain to slide right and up the mountain. I took a chance and assumed he would eventually end up above me so made the adjustment. I had no more made the move and the sleet storm begins killing any sound from leaf walking. I call and sure enough he's now above me and off to my left but fairly close. In no time I catch a flash of white directly above me, then see him peek over a lip. When his head goes down, I adjust and cluck which raises his head for the last time in his life. Pretty awesome hunt.

Some pics. If you ever run across a 3.5" Supreme in the woods chances are high I was there, haha. The look down through the woods was my original set with him rooster in that hole. Other pic is just how pretty some of these places are.

You the man!! He was definitely in the right mood by the color of that head. Appreciate the story and pictures Setterman.

Job well done, you played him well. It sleeted on me before daylight and then turned to drizzle for awhile, only heard 2 this morning a long ways off. You've got those mountain birds figured out, thanks for sharing.

Dream hunt this early in the season! Wonder why he didnt have a wad of ladies? I'd bet there is a toad bird in that area and you hear from him in another week. Congrats!

Birds still largely in winter flocks and I've got a feeling a day of so ago he was part of one and got asked to leave, haha. You're right there's a beast in there, but he's safe from me. I try to only take one bird from an area each spring and so I'm done in there
